Police in Terrell, TX, put the brakes on ‘Cure’ convoy
For nearly a year now, OOIDA Life Member Cindy Stowe has been organizing the second-ever Convoy for a Cure, which was set to roll from the TravelCenters of America in Terrell, TX, on Saturday, Oct. 16.
However, Stowe recently received word from the police department in Terrell that her formal request for the 8-mile convoy had been denied, citing “numerous safety concerns.â€
Stowe told Land Line that she had hoped a compromise could be reached with the police prior to Saturday’s convoy, but it appears that isn’t going to happen.
Terrell Police Chief Jody L. Lay told
Land Line
in a written statement on Wednesday, Oct. 13, that while the department supports “any and all efforts to raise awareness and funds to support our fight against this terrible disease,†they can’t approve the convoy.
“Again the Terrell Police Department and the City of Terrell clearly supports this cause; however, there must be more reasonable and safe methods for raising awareness and funds for the cause,†Lay said.
Last year, the U.S. convoy – hosted at Willie’s Place in Carl’s Corner, TX – raised more than $24,000 for breast cancer research.
Many breast cancer survivors drove in last year’s convoy and were planning to do the same again this year.
Stowe said the “show will go on†at the TA in Terrell, even if they can’t convoy. Prizes will still be awarded to the best “pinked out†decorated truck and motorcycle and to those who raised the most money for breast cancer research. Live entertainment will also be there.
“We will make this work, but it’s disappointing,†Stowe said.
