PeopleNet to Bring New Portable Onboard Computer to Market
PeopleNet announced plans to launch an optionally portable onboard computing platform during the PeopleNet User Conference 2010 last week in Boca Raton, Fla. The PeopleNet Tablet, set to hit the market in the first quarter of 2011, would be the latest device to join its suite of onboard computers designed for the trucking industry.
According to Matt Voda, vice president of product management, the new Tablet is not meant to be a replacement device for the Blu device or its other in-cab offerings. The device will work in mixed fleets.
The system was developed in response to demand for faster workflow and a shorter accounting cycle. Voda said PeopleNet wanted to offer more choice and flexibility for fleets with a mix of needs, such as those segments that need the portable aspect. The Tablet is meant to offer all the capabilities to meet these needs in one device, so fleets can save on the investment, he said.
The fixed mount device runs all PeopleNet applications and third-party partner applications, such as Maptuit, Voda said.
"Fleet owners and managers who want to improve performance and cash flow will see this optionally portable onboard computer system with exceptional built-in capabilities as a way to enable drivers to work in virtually any environment while combining the traditional fix mount systems and handheld computing systems," said Ron Konezny, CEO. "Drivers themselves will appreciate having more drive time behind the wheel instead of handling administrative activities in the cab. Tablet gives them the flexibility to handle non-driving tasks, outside of the cab, from any location."
The new onboard computing platform captures critical vehicle and driver management information that can integrate with the back office. Through its rugged design and 7-inch touch screen, it combines traditional in-cab functionality such as In-Cab Navigation, Vehicle Management (engine diagnostics), eDriver Logs, in-cab training, driver e-mail and messaging and geofencing with portable options, including a camera, barcode scanner, signature capture, and Wi-Fi. The Tablet runs on the Windows 7 operating platform.
Other features include:
Optional built-in barcode scanning identifies overages and shortages immediately
With Tablet's optional built-in camera, drivers can photograph damaged goods and send photos to expedite replacement shipments for better customer service and faster billing
Maintenance managers have access to DVIRs quicker giving them visibility to potential problems
Wi-Fi provides faster data downloads and hot spot access to save communication costs, as well as Internet browsing
Built-in signature capture conveys proof of delivery to the back office for faster invoicing and shorter Day Sales Outstanding (DSO)
In-Cab Navigation can help a fleet eliminate out-of-route miles and reduce fuel consumption
In addition to a docking station for in-cab use and an option for hard mounting, Tablet comes with both soft and hard keyboard options.
