Weekly on-highway diesel prices were up 4.4 cents today from the week before, the U.S. Energy Department’s Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported. That’s the highest price in a year and a half.

Diesel was at $3.122 today compared with $3.078 a gallon last week and $3.074 the week of April 19.

Prices went up the most in the Lower Atlantic reporting region, where truckers were paying $3.079, 5.4 cents more than the $3.025 they were shelling out the week before.

They were paying 5.2 cents more in the East Coast and Central Atlantic reporting regions, where in the East Coast sector the price was $3.127 compared with $3.075 the week of April 26 and in the Central Atlantic reporting sector they were paying $3.238 today compared with $3.186 last week.

In California truckers were paying $3.260 at the pump compared with $3.227 last week.

Crude oil rose 4 cents to $86.19 per barrel today on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Traders watched developments of the Gulf oil spill amid concerns that the fallout from the April 20 accident could disrupt supplies and refining capacity. That would drive the price of oil higher and could hurt the economy.
