Michigan plan would fund road repairs with fuel taxes
LANSING, Mich. — Two state lawmakers are proposing higher taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel to raise money to repair Michigan's roads.
The bills detailed Tuesday are the latest attempt to boost funding for roads and prevent Michigan from losing federal matching money for roads in 2011.
The bills would raise the state's gas tax of 19 cents per gallon to 23 cents this year and to 27 cents in 2013. The diesel tax of 15 cents per gallon would increase to 21 cents this year and to 27 cents in 2013.
It's estimated the measures would raise $480 million a year once fully implemented.
Recent attempts by lawmakers to raise more road money have stalled because of opposition to tax increases.
The new bills are sponsored by Republican Rep. Richard Ball and Democratic Rep. Pam Byrnes.
