Alabama newspapers are reporting a very sad story involving a Good Samaritan who died in the process of trying to help a trucker whose rig was on fire.

The Birmingham News reports that 42-year-old Brent Mitchell had his wife and daughter in the car with him Wednesday night as they drove southbound on Interstate-65 south of Birmingham.

Near the town of Hoover, Mitchell saw a tractor-trailer on fire on the shoulder of the northbound lanes.

He stopped and – not knowing the trucker had already gotten out safely – prepared to cross six lanes of traffic to help.

But his wife Monica is quoted as saying that when he hurtled over a guard rail, he suddenly disappeared from view.

Police say Mitchell had no way of knowing that he had stopped on a bridge, and he fell to his death 80 feet below.

“He was always a genuine helper,” and the police told her “there’s a special place for people like him,” his wife told the newspaper.
