After much debate and three votes in the U.S. House and two votes in the U.S. Senate, the Food Safety and Modernization Act has passed by a vote of 215 to 144. On Wednesday, Dec. 22, the bill was sent to President Barack Obama’s desk for signature.

The bill gives the U.S. Food and Drug Administration the ability to order mandatory recalls if they suspect a potential contamination issue. The bill also gives the FDA the authority to oversee food imports. It mandates that the agency conduct at least 600 inspections of overseas facilities in the first year.
