Employer mandate in Affordable Care Act delayed until 2015

Several news outlets reported Tuesday afternoon that businesses will not be penalized in 2014 if they do not give their workers health insurance, delaying a major element of the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Complaints from employer groups were enough to delay the administration’s original plan to require employers with more than 50 employees to provide health coverage. It will now be required in 2015. White House officials reportedly told the press that the decision was made to give employers time to adapt to the new health-care coverage ruling.

“We have heard concerns about the complexity of the requirements and the need for more time to implement them effectively,” Mark Mazur, Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy, wrote in a blog post, reported by The Washington Post. “We recognize that the vast majority of businesses that will need to do this reporting already provide health insurance to their workers, and we want to make sure it is easy for others to do so.”
