Dr. John McElligott named to FMCSA team to examine DOT physicals

Dr. John McElligott, a small-business trucking advocate who has treated thousands of truck driver patients, has been appointed to a federal group that will investigate revisions of the DOT physical exam.

McElligott was appointed to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Medical Examiner Work Group, which will “examine the flow and content” of the physical examination process commonly referred by doctors as a DOT exam.

The group will also identify tools and resources for clinical practitioners who conduct commercial motor vehicle physicals. This will be in direct support of the medical certification process and FMCSA’s focus on safe driving.

McElligott said he and other members of the work group will help identify and recruit medical providers and organizations in conjunction with the development of the new National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.

Dr. McElligott, an OOIDA Life Member, ran a chain of trucker medical clinics at truck stops until they went out of business last year.

He also has participated in discussions with the FMCSA Medical Review Board during the board’s consideration of several proposed medical rules and changes for truckers.

McElligott continues to treat many truckers at the Knoxville, TN, office of Occupational Health Systems, Inc., the company for which he serves as president and CEO.
