Diesel falls below $4

The national average price for on-highway diesel has fallen below $4 for the first time since early April. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported the national average at $3.997 per gallon for the week ending Monday, May 23.

Diesel averages fell as much as 8 cents per gallon in some regions. Here’s how

U.S. – $3.997, down 6.4 cents
East Coast – $4.011, down 6.4 cents
New England – $4.161, down 4.6 cents
Central Atlantic – $4.138, down 7.2 cents
Lower Atlantic – $3.943, down 6.2 cents
Midwest – $3.935, down 6.1 cents
Gulf Coast – $3.935, down 6.1 cents
Rocky Mountain – $4.101, down 3.3 cents
West Coast – $4.201, down 4.7 cents
California – $4.287, down 8.4 cents

ProMiles, which tracks prices daily, showed Monday’s average at $4.023 per gallon, down half a cent from the previous day. ProMiles does show a number of individual states have dipped below the $4 mark.

Oil prices continue to fall, as well. Midday trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange showed light sweet crude at $97.53 a barrel after a drop of $2.57.
