NORTONVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky State Police say they don't know why a truck driver ran off a parkway in western Kentucky, struck a parked pickup truck, then plunged down an embankment, killing the trucker.

The crash early Sunday afternoon on the Edward. T. Breathitt Parkway in Hopkins County killed 54-year-old Byron E. Nuss Jr. of Warren, Ind.

The KSP report states 44-year-old Tammy Warren of Calhoun, Ky., had pulled to the right shoulder of the road to read a map when Nuss' tractor-trailer truck left the roadway and struck her pickup, knocking it down an embankment.

The rig also ran down the embankment and overturned.

The victims were taken to the Regional Medical Center in nearby Madisonville, where Nuss died.

Tammy Warren and 17-year-old Matt Warren were treated for injuries.
