CFO Express-1 and XPO Retires
Many of you know John Welch, former Chief Financial Officer of Express-1 and later of XPO Logistics. You may remember John as the man who offered grace at most of Express-1’s Celebration Events. With much emotion for all involved, he ended his 16 year career with the company on Friday, May 11. In a poignant goodbye letter, John expressed to his friends at Express-1 his thoughts, feelings and wishes for all of us.
“I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to work with all of you over the past years. Our time together has been marked with good times, tough times, hard work, fun, stress, laughter and mourning; but so it is when you share your life with others. Through it all, we have become a family bound together through our common desire to serve others and to build something that will last; I think we have been quite successful on both counts.
"I think we can all be very proud of the company that we have built because it has been built with integrity and compassion. These characteristics have stood the test of time and will continue to be the cornerstone of who we are. Our people do make the difference and I would put Express-1 up against anyone. Not because we’re inherently better than others, but because we care about each other and the company. Nothing exemplified this more than driver Art Fetterhoff’s final request to be buried in his Express-1 shirt.
"This has been a difficult decision for me and Joy [John’s wife] to make, but as many of you know, sometimes you have to give up something you love to experience new opportunities. Joy and I look forward to the future but it won’t be without pain as I leave behind one of the most truly remarkable experiences of my life.
So, tears well up in my eyes as I say goodbye to you for the final time at Express-1. Thanks for all the memories. Take care and may God bless you in life’s endeavors.â€
