GREENSBORO, N.C. — A Florida truck driver has been charged with felony hit and run and misdemeanor death following an accident involving a tractor-trailer and several motorcyclists from Maryland and Virginia Friday morning near Greensboro.

Authorities said Daniel S. Serna of Plantation, Florida, plowed into a group of motorcyclists from the Black Eagle Ryders motorcycle club, who had pulled off Interstate 85 for a rest break.

Killed in the accident was Arnie M. Morris of Woodbridge, Virginia.

Five other cyclists were injured, police said.

The cyclists, all of whom are truck drivers themselves, were headed to Atlanta for a rally.

The unidentified driver of the big rig from Florida apparently fell asleep and ran off the road, plowing through the motorcycles. He may not have even noticed he had hit them until he pulled off a half-mile up the road because of a flat tire from the crash, according to a police report.

Neither Serna nor the co-driver, Jacob Salazar of 8964 SW 206th Street in Cutler Bay, Florida, were injured. The tractor-trailer is registered to EP Trucking Enterprises in Miami.

Authorities said a witness to the accident who observed the actual impact said the tractor-trailer drifted from the middle southbound travel lane and went right off the road into all six motorcycles.
Morris, who was standing near the edge of the road, was killed instantly.

Two other riders who were standing on the roadside were seriously injured and two others were treated for minor injuries.
