Biden calls for infrastructure investment in Rhode Island with truck tolls
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Vice President Joe Biden says Rhode Island needs to invest in its transportation infrastructure.
Biden visited a highway bridge in East Providence on Friday with the governor and other Rhode Island officials. He says it's shameful that the bridge is in such bad shape.
The state is currently repairing the bridge and building a new one to replace it.
Biden gave a speech at the nearby state Department of Transportation's highway maintenance facility.
Biden applauded the state's 10-year plan to repair bridges and roads, known as RhodeWorks. He defended the concept of partly financing the plan with highway tolls on big-rig trucks.
The plan was approved by the General Assembly and signed by Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo earlier this year after a lengthy public debate over truck tolls.
