It's a Team's Life

Wicked Morning

Bob woke me up in Grand Junction, CO to start driving and the night sky was clear and it was cold.   The drive started out nicely and I was enjoying not fighting with traffic and listening to my books.   I keep a selection of books, pod casts, my favorite being “A Way With Words” as well as music.

After a couple of hours driving I noticed the temperature dropping and the snow was deeper along side of the road.   Then I saw the worst sign of all, the pavement looked wet and it was not raining. “ICE” I slowed down even further and continued to watch for signs of a bad road.   Usually I look for spray off of other vehicles tires, but I was the only one on the road.

In about ten miles there was snow pack in the hammer lane and I thought to myself “the fun is just beginning”.   I was still seventy miles from Loveland Pass and I was running below fifty miles an hour.   Then the other shoe dropped and I saw the dreaded sign…. All CMV must chain one axle.   While I knew I had the automatic chains I also knew it was going to be a long long day.

I was with great excitement when I deployed my chains with a flip of the switch and I heard the noise.   I slowed down to 20 to 25 mph and continued on my way.   By this time there were other trucks on the road with me and there was a long line of trucks installing their chains.   I was right it was a long morning and by the time we made it to the west TA in Denver I was ready for a break.   We filled up with fuel and started back out on the interstate towards Colorado Springs.   There were so many wrecks on the north side of I-25 the road was shut down and lucky for us we continued on our way.

It was slow going all of the way to Colorado Springs with bumper-to-bumper traffic as all vehicles were traveling slow and easy.   We made it to our delivery on time and were quickly unloaded.   While the unloading process was going on the sun peeked out and we continued south towards our next load.   Amazing how a little sun can improve the outlook!
