It's a Team's Life
Why do I want to drive a truck?
It was an overcast night when it was my turn to drive, but that did not last long! I started seeing little flakes in my headlights and I thought to myself this is going to get interesting. I had researched the weather and knew that we would run into this around Salt Lake City, UT so I was somewhat prepared.
I stopped about 100 miles into my driving period to get fuel in Ft. Bridger, WY and it was a white out. I thought about stopped and letting the weather abate, but chose to continue on as the traffic was light and I was able to travel at my own pace. The slow pace is about as slow as a turtle. I was traveling 35 mph and at times wondered if this was to fast for driving conditions. It was ugly out and I was impressed, as everyone seemed to be taking their time and I saw no accidents or people in the ditch.
I was finally able to join a convoy of trucks and follow in their tracks as we slowly weaved, climbed hills, and all of us moving as a group towards our respective destinations. I had the CB on which is unusual, but there was no chatter as we all had two hands on the steering wheel.
The weather cleared up some as I turned on I-84 towards Ogden and I was able to run 55 mph and then the weather turned again for the worse. I was back down to 35 mph with 4 wheelers passing me. The scale was open and I pulled in, drove across the scales and started back towards the interstate and hit major ice! The rear end of the truck kicked out and I felt as if I was back in my racing days as I got her back under control. That got my heart pumping for sure.
I was almost to the I-84 I-86 split and I was hoping I-84 would look better as the road was really deteriorating. I was thrilled when I took the ramp to I-84 going west and the roads were clear. The sun started coming up and it was a beautiful sunrise.
We started up Cabbage and it was gorgeous as the trees were laden with snow and the sun was sparkling off of the snow. I remembered in a short period of time why I like my job!
