Truck Weights

Our truck and sleeper combination is heavy and we are especially heavy on the front end.   Our truck weighs in at 31,000-lbs full of fuel, us, all of our personal stuff, and all of our freight handling equipment.

The law allows us 20,000-lbs on any single axle, as long as the tires and axles are rated to carry that weight.   Our truck was built as a single drive axle truck.   We added a lift gate at 800-lbs, auxiliary fuel tank when full at 600-lbs, and our lift axle at 1500-lbs which greatly increased our over all weight as well as our axle weight. Our steer axle weighs in at 12,500-lbs and the drive axle weighed in at about 18,500 allowing us only 2000-lbs before the lift axle needs to be put down.

If we did not have the lift axle we basically could only haul 2500-lbs of freight and we would qualify as a B-Unit.   We could do without a lot of our personal possessions, but our White Glove equipment is required and everything we add to the truck adds weight.   When we put the pusher axle down we are now able to haul the required 13,000-lbs of freight to be a D unit.

We have a heavy-duty front end and our front tires are rated for the heavier weights.   All of our freight it loaded as close to the back as possible which takes the weight off of the front axle.

In our experience with expediting we very seldom haul much weight with our average weights being below 3000-lbs.   We have been asked why we built a D unit and we did this so that we would be available for the most freight, thus maximizing our income potential.   Some of our freight while light is long and with our 22’ box we are available for these types of loads.

We are the maximum legal length for a straight truck with the truck being a full 40’ long, between our truck, 100” sleeper, and our 22’ box. Our lift gate tucks under the dry box and does not add anything to our overall length.
