Steen was in attendance at GATS in 2012 and I found him working in the Trucker Buddy International booth as an ambassador.   A group of Trucker Buddy drivers were going out in the evening, Steen and I drew the short straw and we rode in the back of a pickup together for a couple blocks to a local restaurant.

In that short period of time we realized we had both learned to drive in the oil field and truth be told we both figured out we were a little ornery.   Steen has been driving over 40 years and he has been there, done that, and has the t-shirt.   He has a done a little bit of everything including what he is doing now hauling Rocky Mountain Doubles from Denver to Casper, WY each week and then a reefer to the Los Angeles area.

While talking with Steen I quickly realized while he might be ornery he takes driving very seriously and has driven over 4 million miles without a preventable accident.   At one time he was an O/O and has pictures of him drag racing his truck.   He went to get his truck one morning   and the truck was gone.   Someone had slipped in, stole his truck and over the next several years’ different pieces of the truck showed up.   At that time he decided to become a company driver.

Steen has been a Trucker Buddy for eleven years with the same teacher in the Denver area.   He talked about taking his Rocky Mountain Doubles to the class one time down some questionable streets and I can only imagine how big the kid’s eyes were when he crawled out of the cab.   Each year he takes a picture of the kids in the class with his truck and at Christmas he presents the teacher with a model truck and the picture.   She has them all in her classroom.   Some of his very first kids are now adults and are still excited to see him around town.

Meeting someone like Steen enriches lives as he is a born teacher and he does enjoys helping out a new driver or a driver who has questions on how to drive better.   I questioned him at length on how he traverses all of the mountains he does winter and summer pulling doubles.

One of the many things Steen is proud of is being the 2007 Trucker of the Year for Colorado.   He is also very proud of when he became a United States Citizen and we spent some time looking through his pictures.

Steen runs a dedicated route and one of his favorite stops in Peggy Sue's 50's diner in Yermo, CA.   He has been stopping in the diner for the past eleven years and this is where we caught up with him out on the road.   It was easy to see that he was one of the favorite customers as we listening to the waitresses bantering back and forth with him.

Meeting people like Steen and learning of his background are one of the fascinating facets of the trucking industry.   I hope someday you will be lucky enough to meet Steen.
