Spooktacular

With Halloween just around the corner or just behind us, I thought it would be fun to talk about some of the craziest and scary things we have seen in our driving career. Now I’m sure that many of you have some great stories to tell as well so feel free to share!

Very early on in our career I was driving along an interstate when out of nowhere a semi in the far left lane suddenly crosses all four lanes of traffic and hits several cars in its path. I can only speculate as to what caused that to happen. My first observation was how quickly traffic came to a complete stop. My second observation was how quickly truck drivers jumped out of their trucks to attend to the drivers of the cars. There was only one vehicle in front of me that had moved out of the way so I did the same. This allowed us to continue on our load. I remember seeing a driver in one of the cars looking so stunned. She was awake but was not trying to get out of her car. This was our first near miss in our trucking career. As you can see we did not get out to assist. Now, many years later we do try to help if we can.

On another occasion, I was driving along and came upon an accident that had happened before we got there. It was on the opposite side of road. I was immediately feeling many different emotions as I drove by. I felt a little sick to my stomach as well as sadness when I saw that white sheet laid on the road. I also have seen EMT’s working on a person that had been involved in an accident. What I saw shocked me because seeing chest compressions in real life is certainly different than what is portrayed on television. Both of these scenes were a first for me. I am happy to say that up until now I have not seen those situations again.

Finally, I have seen a car going in the wrong direction on our side of the road. I think that this is more common than the other scenarios states above. Regardless, it is still unnerving.

For those of you who will be out on the roads during Halloween, whether you working or just enjoying time taking the kiddos or grands out trick or treating, please be safe.

Here’s to millions of SAFE and profitable miles.
