Snow Storm

We had loaded in Kansas and were on our way to California traveling west across I-70.   On our way to get loaded I had been watching our dash readout as I was up in the 14-mpg range.  Once Bob started driving we got into the wind and the fuel mileage dropped like a rock down into the ten-mpg range.

Bob finally drove out of the wind when he made it to Colorado and it was calm and cool when I started driving about 3:00 in the morning.  It was a beautiful night and I was enjoying the scenery that was illuminated by the moon.  Then the clouds started getting thicker and before long I could not see the moon.

I started watching the dash readout and saw the temperature was dropping and then I saw it…. I was hoping I was seeing things that really could not be a snowflake.  Then I saw another snowflake and before long I was into a full-blown snowstorm and wishing Bob had installed our slush busters.  This was the first storm in many years that I have driven in without the aid of our slush busters.  The slush buster keeps any ice build up on the wiper blades, which in turn keeps the windshield clearer.

I starting going through everything I have read or heard about keeping a windshield clear without the aid of the slush busters.  First was to keep the windshield cool so the snow will brush off.  It was tough to turn the defrost to cold but I have to admit it helped even if I was slowly freezing to death.  I also lower the sun visors to help keep the cold against the windshield.  This accomplished a lot as I had a clear view of the snowstorm.  In no time I was traveling at 35 mph and wondering at times if that was a little fast.

Traffic was light and I was easily able to travel at a speed I was comfortable with and continue on.  I finally reached I-15 and turned south and was pleased to see that this road was clear and I could start running at 58 mph once again.

This weekend Bob will be installing the slush busters and I will get pictures up on what these look like on the windshield! Here is to a safe winter.
