Saving Room

Most of my ideas I have learned from talking with other drivers who have solved a storage problem or have ingenious ideas.    I like multi use items:

Microwave - Over the years I have used the microwave to store and stack plates, bowls and plastic utensils.   I used a pie tin as a base to our paper plates and the pie tins were also a base to pull out the stack from the microwave.   Now I use the microwave to store bread and cereal boxes.

Rice Cooker – I get a lot of use out of this item.   When not in use I store my hot pads, plastic spoon for the rice cooker, and plastic measuring cups inside the unit.   The rice cooker when in use cooks are meals and then heats up the water to wash any cooking utensils I have used as well as itself.

IPad – IPhone – headset – My headset is capable of playing music, listening to books, and receiving calls.   With a push of a button I can switch from listening to music to a call and back again to my music.   The IPad has become my e-reader as one of its uses.   Before I carried lots of books which took up way to much room now the IPad carries my books and in a pinch I use my phone to with the Kindle app to carry my written books.   The space storage is amazing not having to carry hardback books.

CD Cases – We do not have a TV in the truck, but both of us enjoy movies.   Carrying movies in their original cases takes up a lot of un-necessary storage room.   We purchased CD cases and now we throw away the original DVD case and put the DVD in the CD case.   This enables us to carry 100’s of movies in a very little space.   I also use the CD cases for my computer software CD’s.

Freezer – When at home I often make extras and have found that if I put the leftovers in a freezer bag and shape into the form of a book I can bring a lot of leftovers.

Plastic ring left over after opening a bottle – this was shared on the EO forums and I thought this was a great idea.   The ring can be used to contain cords in a nice neat bundle.   Pass the cord through then loop back in forth until the desired length.   This can also be a way to store cords when not in use.   Bigger bottles for bigger cords and small bottles for smaller cords.   Nice and neat!

Plastic containers – I am a big fan of plastic see through containers and baskets.   The plastic containers are stackable and see through and will make better use of space.   I use baskets to hold our clothes instead of trying to get them to stack inside the cupboards.   I pull the basket out and get what I need and put the basket back.   Nothing falls over or makes a mess while going down the road.
