Salton Sea is in California situated right on top of the San Andreas Fault and is lower than sea level.   Currently the surface of the water is 226 below sea level.

The Salton Sea is the largest lake in California 15 miles by 35 miles with a maximum depth of 52’.   The lakes salinity, about 44g/L, is greater than the waters of the Pacific Ocean but less than that of the Great Salt Lake.

We have driven by the Salton Sea several times and this time I decided to look up the above information on Wikipedia and was amazed at how salty this sea is.   The first time we saw the sea I could not believe my eyes that such a huge body of water was out in the desert.

The Salton Sea is located on highway 78/86 between Calexico and Indio California.   The highway is in good shape and a drive we always enjoy.
