Safety Survey Results
Feeling safe on the road all the time is very important to everyone. We saw the results of a survey that was conducted by FinditParts FinditParts Website that we found interesting. The survey was based on the generation you born in. The generations that responded to the survey were Boomers, Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z.
Here is the link to the survey results if you want to look at all of them: FinditParts Safety Survey Results
Some of the key takeaways we felt were important.
The percentage of the generations that felt safe at truck stops.
· Boomers - 84% of drivers born between 1946 and 1964
· Gen X - 86% of drivers born between 1965 and 1980
· Millennials - 78% of drivers born between 1981 and 1996
· Gen Z - 59% of drivers born between 1997 and 2012
From the survey FinditParts say these are the key takeaways:
Truck stop safety is the most important thing drivers look for when stopping at a truck stop.
4 in 5 drivers (80%) would be willing to pay a premium for truck stops with cleaner facilities and superior security.
More than 1 in 3 Gen Z drivers (35%) report feeling unsafe at truck stops.
Nearly half of women feel unsafe sleeping overnight at a truck stop.
From those key take almost 50 percent of women feel unsafe. The question from just that is how as an industry can we reverse that to make women feel safe. In 2021 the Women In Truck Association talked to women about safety on the road and had just about 450 participants respond to that survey. Here is the link to the article: How Safe do Female drivers feel on the road
Back to the FinditParts survey. The respondents ranked which feature of a truck stop was the most important. As you can see below that safety was the number one feature.
Here are the results:
· Safety – 21%
· Amenities and Services – 19%
· Distance from Highway – 18%
· Cleanliness – 11%
· Brand – 10%
· Low Fuel Prices – 9%
· First Available – 9%
· Don’t Stop At Truck Stops – 2%
The key takeaway on the safety 21% was drivers look for the following: security features like adequate lighting, surveillance cameras, and visible security personnel.
Here are some suggestions for women from women on safety on the road. Back in 2020 Michele Wade with Women In Trucking ask two member “How to stay safe on the road”. The article has many good suggestions from these two women drivers. Hint you might recognize one of them yes Sandy.
Another interesting point that this survey pointed out was: “Based on our findings, the adage "never judge a book by its cover" clearly doesn't apply to truck stops. While nearly 95% of drivers surveyed said security concerns like lack of lighting and remoteness would prevent them from stopping at a truck stop, the biggest deterrent for drivers was simply that the “facility looks unsafe.””
We sure do like what we read here. Drivers are thinking about their own safety.
So, this was really interesting. The survey found that 80% of drivers would be willing to pay a premium for a safe and clean truck stop. “When it comes to personal safety at truck stops, most drivers have no problem shelling out more cash for clean facilities and superior security features. Our survey revealed that 8 in 10 respondents would pay at least 5% more for services at a truck stop where they felt safe, while 2 in 5 would pay up to 25% or more.”
From this same willing to pay the premium women are will to pay more than men for that service. “When it comes to personal safety at truck stops, both men and women are willing to pay a premium for cleanliness and security. However, men are significantly more likely to pay higher premiums, with over half of male respondents willing to pay up to 25% or more for services at a safe truck stop. In contrast, only 42% of women would be willing to pay this same percentage more.”
So, lets all be safe and be alert to our surroundings and watch out for our fellow drivers. As, in you have your peers back. Also, it is always good “if you see something, say something”. We have found that most truck stop management are open to hearing what you have to say to improve their service and facility.
