One of the idiosyncrasies of expediting is sitting!   You either hate it or learn to use it to your advantage.   If we have to sit then I would rather sit while pre dispatched as we have freedom to get away from the truck.   If we are waiting for a load, we need to be ready to accept a load and be rolling within ten minutes.

We have tons to do when the truck is rolling and when the truck is sitting. This past Labor Day weekend we ended up with four days off before our next load.   We were in the great state of North Carolina and our pickup was in Alabama.   We could have just sat and twiddled our thumbs but we choose to see some sites before we needed to get our chores done.

Our first tourist stop was the Richard Childress Racing Museum in Welcome, NC.   Dale Earnhardt was my second favorite driver next to Sammy Swindell.   The museum has some truck parking and I believe they would accommodate a tractor trailer.   We were able to tour the museum and also the separate shop area.   I enjoyed seeing the shop and wished there had been more cars being worked on.

The museum is really awesome!   The museum was very clean and orderly with nice signs located near each exhibit.   There were also overhead TV’s with races going on showing the car I was looking at.   I was able to see the car that Dale won the Daytona 500 with in 1998.   There were also the pictures of the pit road where every team and member of the press congratulated Dale.   It was enough to almost bring tears to my eyes thinking this track was also the track he would lose his life to in 2001.

The museum was well worth our time to stop and visit.   The web site to get more information is: http://rcrracing.com/museum/

On Saturday we dropped down to Reed's Goldmine in Midland, NC.   This location is where gold was first found in the United States.    We watched a short movie on the history of the mine then toured the museum which was short and nice.   Then we were off to tour the mine itself.   The mine is self-guided with a tour map and locations to stop and read about its history.   I believe they did a great job at marking places of interest and explaining what we viewed.   The tour is hilly with stairs and was a nice workout.   After we finished the tour, we paid $2.00 for the chance to try our hand at panning for gold!   Bob found a spec and I found nothing, but it was fun.   The nice surprise about this place is everything was free except to pan for gold.   I am glad we had the time and then took the time to stop by and visit.
