No HIGH Fructose Corn Syrup

I have started reading labels and have cut out many of my old favorites from my diet.   The hardest to cut out was A1 Steak Sauce but I have accomplished this.   When I reach for a product I look at the label and see the sodium content and if there is High Fructose Corn Syrup.   We do not have a problem with high blood pressure and I plan to keep it that way.

In the past year I have read a couple of books that have changed how I look at foods and their labels.   One is the book “ Master Your Metabolism” by Jillian Michaels.   This is a book review quote:

One of the new anti-diet books, this incredibly detailed guide combines personal memoir, serious science, and healthy eating recommendations to shed light on how artificial additives and other external factors can sabotage our weight-loss efforts.

This book was an eye opener for me on why I cannot eat just one chip…   It is not me it is the chemicals added to our foods.   Many of the foods we eat are genetically changed so that they block our brains from telling us we are full.   I found the book very interesting and full of facts that affect our daily lives.   We have to eat but do we have to eat the junk?   Why do we crave the junk foods?   This book explained a lot on why we choose the foods we choose.

Another book that was very interesting was “ The Omnivore’s Dilemma” by Michael Pollan. This is a book review quote:

Beautifully written and thrillingly argued, The Omnivore’s Dilemma promises to change the way we think about the politics and pleasure of eating. For anyone who reads it, dinner will never again look, or taste, quite the same.

We are from the one of the area’s he discusses in his book about cattle feed yards.   Driving by feed yards was part of the scenery and the smell of living in SW Kansas.   We are aware of how a calf is born, how the calves life will live out.   We are even aware of what a calf is fed once they reached the feed yard.   Corn makes beef tastier and hormones and additives make the calf gain weight and tenderized the meat on the hoof. What I did not think of was how this affects our bodies.   I found the book to not be one of those that uses scare tactics to keep me from eating certain things it was more of a book about what we eat each and every day.

I found that the book contained harsh realities on how the tender piece of steak arrives on our plate.   I enjoyed reading about how the mom and pop farms use humanitarian ways to kill their animals and how they work to conserve their soils and not use pesticides.   This book had no trouble keeping my interest.

When we can find grass fed animals or free range chicken breasts to purchase in stores we stock up.   Our lifestyle makes finding these items a little more difficult as we are not always in a metropolitan area on layover.   I will continue to learn more about foods and figure out ways to purchase natural foods in my quest to improve our health.
