Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs)

It has been awhile since we have been to the Flying J in Houston, TX and we were in for a little surprise.   First we could not find any parking and while looking for a space we found a large area fenced off near the back of the lot.

The fenced in area houses a brand new not quite open LNG fueling station with two fuel spaces.   I am still in the process of learning about the intricacies of these vehicles and even down to how to fuel a NGV.   We lived in SW Kansas, which has huge natural gas fields, and most of our appliances were natural gas or propane. An additive was added to natural gas to make it smell very bad if there was a leak.   Will this be the same for these fueling stations?   If so the parking area is going to smell horrible.

T. Boone Pickens is an advocate for natural gas and in an article I read he is quoted as saying “When we buy OPEC Oil, we’re helping to fund the Taliban”.   I attended the Navistar event held at MATS this year where Boone talked about the future of CNG and why this needs to happen.   I am reading and hearing more about these vehicles and as of right now have only seen locals vehicles using CNG, it will not be long before we are seeing them out on the open highway.

An article on the Team Run Smart, Truck Smart page by Greg Treinen talks about all of the advantages of NGVs and why they are healthier for the environment.   He has several bullet points that make a great case such as the cost, the noise, decrease in foreign dependency, and fewer emissions.

Clean Energy has partnered with Pilot-Flying J to install 70 stations to be open by the end of 2012 with 98 being open by the end of 2013.   Looking at the map of the proposed locations they will be spread evenly across the United States.

It looks like an all ready bad situation of not having a place to park will even get worse in the upcoming months.
