Memorial Day has taken on a different meaning to us, as our youngest daughter is a Captain in the Air Force.   My grandfather was in the military and he very seldom spoke of his days in the Navy and his job.   Our daughter has educated us on the workings of the military and given us a deeper understanding of what all her job entails.

While talking with a friend this morning my interest was piqued about the meaning of Memorial Day. Henry has been doing a lot of research and reading and he shared many of tidbits on the facts he learned. I went to a few sites he recommended and started reading on my own.

A couple of interesting facts I learned:

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5th 1868 and flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers.   The South refused to acknowledge this day until after World War 1.

In 1951, the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of St. Louis began placing flags on the 150,000 graves at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery as an annual Good Turn, a practice that continues to this day.

This is another fact I learned that I feel as a truck driver we will be able to observe is this:

To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the " National Moment of Remembrance" resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans "To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to ' Taps."

If you would like to read more on Memorial Day this is one of the links I used in my research:
