Bob showing us how to bowl

We arrived early as our truck went into the FedEx Custom Critical Booth on Tuesday.  We were able to see the truck for the first time as a compete expediter before rushing off to dinner. Next four of us went bowling and we quickly learned that we needed to keep our day jobs.   We had a great time and enjoyed the evening.

On Wednesday we checked in on the truck and the booths progress.   We took care of a few odds and ends in the booth and with the Cascadia.   Next we were off to tour Churchill Downs, which is within walking distance of Papa Johns Stadium parking.   We took a tour of the barn area and were able to tour the jockey’s room as well as the paddock area.   Next was upstairs to the announcer’s booth.   The day was pretty chilly and at one time we had to avoid sleet.   The weather did not diminish our thrill of seeing behind the scenes and thought of many of the horses and trainers who had walked the area before us.

Wednesday evening nine truck drivers headed south to Shepherdsville to drive go-karts.   This has to be the best track Bob and I have ever played on.   The track is long with many curves to keep each driver on their toes and plenty of room to pass.   We all drove three laps quickly and were frozen stiff and all had a great time.

Thursday was the easiest day of the truck show.   We were able to see a few booths, spent time in the truck talking to people, and I worked in the Women in Trucking booth for a while.   I enjoyed my time in the booth talking to other women over the road drivers.

Friday was a very busy day as we worked the blood mobile from 11:00 am till 4:00 pm.   In the morning we had our FedEx Contractor breakfast that we always enjoy attending.   The blood mobile stayed busy and several drivers stopped by to give blood or stop and chat about The Trucking Solutions Group.   Some were able to give blood others were not.   We were very pleased with the turnout.   Over half of the donors were first time people and we had more donors than the Blood Mobile was able to handle.   I hope next year we will be inside and will be able to take more donors.

MATS Health Awareness Walk with Bob Perry

Saturday started at 6:00 in the morning with a Trucking Solutions Group meeting and from there we progressed to the walk.   On the way to the breakfast Bob and I marked the distances of the walk and marked the lines with colored chalk.   I really enjoy playing with colored chalk.   We had fewer walkers then we did last year and that was a little disappointing.   We felt as if we had more drivers this year and less corporate people walking.

MATS Health Awareness Walk warm up with Bob Perry

In the afternoon Bob and I attended the Salute to Women drivers sponsored by Women in Trucking.   This event is a lot of fun and very inspirational.   One million mile to 4 million mile women safe drivers was recognized.   This year there were two women who have driven over 4 million safe miles.

We were sad when the show was over and exhausted.   The show a huge success for us and will go down in the record books as one of the best MATS we have attended.   We look forward to MATS 2012.
