How well do we like each other?

Bob 33 years ago who would have guessed...

The decision was not made lightly to see the country in a truck and even after the decision was made it took months of planning before this became a reality.    After the grander thoughts wore off and reality started setting in I began to wonder if we were insane.   Why would we want to leave our spacious house with running water for a small sleeper on wheels?

As the weeks went by and we started thinking of the day-to-day living inside of a truck the doubts started sinking in.   How well do we really know each other after being married twenty years? Can we stay cooped up in a small area night and day?   How do we disagree and then find the space to regroup and get back on an even keel.   There is not any privacy in a truck and how will I cope with that?

Our relationship changed once we got into a truck and stayed out on the road for several months before coming home.   One of the first things we learned was that even though the truck was our home away from home our business came first.   When a load offer came in or while under a load our personal life as well as feelings had to be put on hold.

We learned privacy is over rated and that neither one of us are built perfect or have perfect habits.   We made the choice to use the shower rooms together as I felt a lot more comfortable having Bob with me when guys were walking right outside the door talking.   He has figured out I take a lot of stuff into the shower with me and it takes patience while waiting for me to use all those products.   I have found that Bob likes to stay in the shower longer with hot water spraying his lower back to relax his muscles.

We were both seventeen in this picture.

While we were home in our spacious house it was easy for me to go to bed early and leave him watching TV and for me to get up early, grab a cup of coffee and cross stitch before the rest of the family got up.   We have worked this problem out in the truck with a small DVD player and an IPAD.   Bob often stays up sitting in the front of the truck and will watch a movie while I sleep.   In the morning I get up, make coffee and sit in the front of the truck or if at a truck stop sometimes will go inside with my computer and will eat breakfast.

We have learned to respect what little space each of us has staked out in the truck.   I take care of the inside of the Cascadia and use up every inch of space while Bob has the back of the truck as well as all of the belly boxes but one.   When we are laid over Bob spends time working on the outside of the truck truck polishing while I work on the inside of the truck.

We have been on the road almost twelve years now and many of the people who said we would be back home in a couple years are still shaking their heads.   While we are away from home our minds are focused on our truck and seeing and enjoying as much of the country as possible.   When it is time to go home our minds shift back to the house and all that we have to get done while there.   We make the most of being on the road and when we are home we make the most out of our home time.
