Grand Coulee Dam, WA
View coming south on highway 155 into the town of Coulee Dam
We always thought Hoover Dam was big until we saw this monstrosity. The closer we drove the bigger the dam became and it is impressive! After our lift gate delivery we stopped in at the visitors center to learn more about the Grand Coulee dam. If we had been there in the summer we would have jumped at the chance to take a tour but alas it is winter and no dam tours.
Construction on the Grand Coulee Dam begab in 1933 only two years after the Hoover Dam was started. It is hard to imagine that in the thirties these two huge projects were started. Hoover Dam is taller at 726 feet while the Grand Coulee Dam is a modest 550 feet in height. Where the Grand Coulee Dam is really impressive is its length of 5,223 feet to the Hoover Dam’s 1244 feet.
Another interesting fact is that there is 12 million cubic yards of concrete in the dam. That is enough concrete to build a sidewalk 4 feet wide four inches thick and wrap it around the equator twice. The Grand Coulee Dam can generate 6809 megawatts while the Hoover Dam at peak capacity can generate 2078 megawatts.
One of the features we really liked about seeing the dam is that everything is free. The visitor’s center is free as well as the dam tours. During peak months the visitors center projects a laser light show on the face of the dam, which I imagine is beautiful.
The dam is located in Coulee Dam, Washington on highway 155 and you can not miss it!
