FSC never matters…

That being said I like to play with figures.   When we receive our settlement sheets I break out what we have been paid for.   I like to know at the end of the year what we made using our lift gate, our pallet jack, and loads we had to special handle.

Another line item I keep track of is our fuel surcharge.   Last year, 2010, we ran 130,151 miles and our total fuel cost; cash price less discount was $40,038.70.   We were paid $22,108.71 in fuel surcharge (FSC) that offsets our fuel costs to $17,930.

When I look at my figures I look at what our fuel costs us per mile to run averaging 9.5 mpg.   Each tank of fuel we purchase is entered into my spreadsheet and the mpg is figured.   I have the figures from the first tank of fuel we purchased for this truck up to the last fill up.   I can easily see what the affects a new piece of aerodynamic equipment has had on our fuel mileage.  

I have added a column to my spreadsheets so that I can constantly remind myself what the fuel tax is in each state.   This column will often determine on which side of a state line we will buy our fuel.   We take the fuel tax off of the price of fuel and than are able to compare true fuel prices.   Often the higher priced fuel is the cheapest fuel to purchase.  

Fuel is one of our biggest costs and one that can be controlled through constantly monitoring our speed for optimal fuel mileage and paying attention to our driving habits.   Bob is also a fanatic at maintaining the truck and watching our air pressure in the tires.   Through all of that we have brought our truck from a 7-mpg truck to consistently achieving 9’s and 10’s for our fuel mileage.
