We have PrePass, which keeps us from being pulled into many scales. As some of you might know we are very fuel conscious and stopping and starting is hard on our fuel mileage, which is what often happens in a scale. Each time we are pulled into a scale we take the chance of being inspected. While we are not worried about being inspected, the inspection takes time and often on loads we do not have the time.
PrePass use a automated vehicle identification system which enables the enrolled trucks when passing under one of their readers to either get a red light or green light. There are many factors involved that will give us a red light or a green light with the red light meaning pull into the scale and a green light meaning continue on by. We might think we can fool the system and continue on, BUT if we get a red light and we do not turn into the scale the next reader which is usually parallel to the scale will pick this information up. The reader gives the scale all of the information about our truck and whom we are leased to, so we would be very easy for an officer to chase us down.
When we purchased our new truck we updated our PrePass so that when we hit the road we had this installed on the windshield. We use our OOIDA membership discount to pay for PrePass, which is a month fee of $13.50.
Since we have PrePass we are not so worried about seeing the sign with the “Big Word†closed or the little word “Open†being displayed on the scale signs.
