It's a Team's Life
20 mph 3000 miles RAAM Day 4
The race started after pre race jitters! I know that I was about to hyperventilate before we started rolling from nerves. In my years of racing and the different extreme activities I have participated in I have never felt like this. The nervousness was due to the fear of me failing and giving this amazing team wrong directions and them having to peddle ever further to get back on the course.
The start went without a hitch and we were off and driving with the team peddling their behinds off. We all quickly discovered that the directions have been great and we have been able to keep everyone on course. We traveled from Oceanside east going through the rolling hills to Fallbrook and then continued on west.
We learned what it means to “leapfrog†around our team and look for pull-offs where we could move the follow vehicle five feet away from the road way. This is very difficult in this area and stay within a mile of the riders to maintain radio contact. We managed to do this correctly and not acquire any 15 minute or hour penalties.
During the night we follow directly with the team constantly in our headlights. All passes to the next team of two riders is done at a standstill. Some of our transfers have went longer then anticipated, but we are getting quicker.
I have now transferred to my rest time in the RV for eight hours and am enjoying the break from the almost constant talking to the riders while navigating or the stress of staying about 100 meters behind the riders at all times.
I am including a picture of what our view is from our follow
vehicle in the day and at night.
To keep
track of our progress we are an eight-man team T805 Ohio Cycle Works.
We have crossed into Arizona!
