Wasting More Weekends
It still amuses me that houseplants grow outside in Florida.
There isn’t much of this weekend to waste, since I had freight to deliver in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Saturday morning. Consume Friday night and the weekend is a lot shorter compared to just sitting. Sort of the opposite of partying on Friday night adds an extra day to a weekend.
Last weekend gave me a chance for other projects. $1.67 and two sawn slots replaced the board that I use to keep freight from sliding forward, under cargo straps. A forklift operator destroyed my other board; Menard’s has great deals in their value bin of wood scraps.
Equally constructive, I compiled a list of the movies that
are referenced in the movie,
Get Shorty.
I really like the movie. I like the style from the music to the clothes, and
the characters are developed perfectly. Part of the mastery of the movie is how
Hollywood names are slipped into the dialogue. I figured there must be a list
of the movie references somewhere, and after a number of years not stumbling
upon a list, I decided to compile the list myself. It took twice as long as
watching the movie straight through, because I had to stop and replay a lot to
make sure I wasn’t missing many of the smooth, subtle references that were
injected between the fictional names.
Here’s the movie list (in order of appearance)(I also counted 22 actors mentioned by name)(let me know if I missed any):
Cagney movies in general
Serpico
Casablanca (movie poster)
The Thin Man (movie poster)
The Cabin in the Cotton
Touch of Evil (part of dialogue and film clip)
Driving Miss Daisy
Fingers
Guilda (not by name; inferred in fragment of a conversation mentioning Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford)
Get Shorty
3 Men and a Baby (not by name; referred to the theme in a conversation)
Rio Bravo (part of dialogue and movie clip)
El Dorado
