If you are one of the estimated 3.5 million truck drivers out on the roads today, you are probably aware of the significance of the month of September. This is when way back in 1988 the first Truck Driver Appreciation Week began. It was officially established in 1998 by the American Trucking Association (ATA) and is celebrated annually during the second week of September. This year, National Truck Driver Appreciation Week will be from September 15 through September 21, officially, however, many organizations will acknowledge on different days of the month, or in some cases, all month long.

Carriers and customers will usually set aside some time to show their appreciation for truck drivers during the month of September. For the newer drivers, this may include food or drinks, small gifts or just an acknowledgement of your efforts as a truck driver.

Truck stops will usually have “freebies” or discounts during the month of September to show their appreciation for all you do. You might have to download and use their apps to get the freebies or discounts, so make sure to check them out this month. Among the things you will find for Driver Appreciation Week (Month) from the major truck stops, you could find a sizable discount on that new bluetooth device you have been eyeing, or even a better deal on that new GPS unit.

Pilot/Flying J will have 3 free drinks per week this month, but you do need to save the offers in the app first to receive them. Check the app each week to see which free drinks are offered, and the other specials that week.

Love’s will also be offering drivers deals this month. From Sept 1 - Sept 30 you can earn double points for in-store purchases. You can also get $10 back in My Love Rewards points for any oil or PM purchase in September. Love’s also has a special promotion for Love’s Truck Washes this month. There are also drink and food deals. All of these are in the app and the offer(s) must be saved in the app to get the deal(s).

TA/Petro usually have cookouts and goodie bags, but none of it is listed in their app. Visit a location for dates and times.

Wherever your travels take you in the month of September, you are likely to see or visit a place that will be participating in National Truck Driver Appreciation Week (or Month). When you do encounter one or more of these events, make sure to take the time to thank those who recognize you for your efforts as well. More than likely any organization recognizing or celebrating National Truck Driver Appreciation Week will have a direct connection with your industry. Carriers, customers and truck stops rely on you, the truck driver, for their businesses, however, you, the truck driver, also rely on them to run your business.

Make it a habit to tell people thank you. To express your appreciation, sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return. Truly appreciate those around you, and you'll soon find many others around you. Truly appreciate life, and you'll find that you have more of it.

See you down the road,
