I would find a $200,000 White Glove C-unit and turn it into an ice cream truck! Then get a job with the FBI and make the sleeper a survalence unit. The income from the ice cream sales alone would pay for the truck in no time. The liftgate would make it wheelchair accessible. E-track would hold the pork I'd make into kabobs and sell to all the hungry Arab chirlins. And $1 per ride on the pallet jack.

The FBI gig is just a hobby. I actually want to use the truck for sports medicine during football season. I wonder if they'd allow me to skip preseason as ice cream season lasts into September.

In a sense I can't expedite. I guess to be technical I can, but w/ what I want in my life it's really not feasable. So w/ that being said I'm out of expediting. I signed off w/ EGL a couple of weeks ago.

What I have done is start a carpet cleaning business. Right now things are slow in terms of amount of work (about 1 job per week though nothing between Christmas & New Years) but things are great in terms of amount per hour. Ideally I'll be able to get things going to where I have a job or 2 per day. This would enable me to have a similar income as I had w/ a lot less time put in.

We'll see how it plays out, but that's what I'd do if I could no longer expedite.

Take care,
Danny

I too couldn't go back to the 'regular' workforce either too used to my life style. If I would have to quit expediting tomorrow, I'd want to go into my dream job of raising horses.

That is a good question:

Join the Circus.

Now for real I'd Weld and Braze in the shipyards piece of cake
On Nuclear systems not a prolbem been there done that.

Why not now. Id rather do my first love Drive Tractor trailers.

2ndly, KBR Needs Truck Drivers KBR NEEDS Welders and KBR needs Special Armed Security I can fill all the bills.

Would I go there Yupper in a heart beat. Since now Im over there 1.5 year mark of being outa military I might just get picked. Wouldn't that be nice I'd get my wish for one more time.

But hey if you see a guy running in blacks with Hawk Eye on his chest while at a Truck Stop it just me keepiing in shape.

The only tough day was yesterday, remember failure is not an option

Great timing on this post. Have put trk up for sale here at EO(2000 frt @ $35500)and fair retirement planning has made it a doable option. My dream has always been to chase the sun along the west coast in about 38' of sailboat. We are ready to market our Az. home, however, our 21 year old came back home. Everything is in a holding pattern, however, I find myself on Boattrader a lot more lately. I notice a lot of us refer to warm climates, fishing and something to drink with a little umbrellas in it. Happy New Year to each of you ; may each dream or plan come true.

RE: YOU HAVE TO QUIT EXPEDITING - WHAT WILL YOU DO

I never planned on a career in expediting. One day the opportunity was there and I took it. When it comes to life, careers and the 'big picture" I'm not much of a planner. I'm just along for the ride.

Like most of you, after being an O/O I don't think I could go to work for someone else. I wish I could ply my canoe along the Minnesota-Ontario border. But the fur trade has been slow the last hundred years and even during its peak it was seasonal. I guess I could join Cheri at Kenmore Estates and collect aluminum cans and go dumpster diving.

When I do leave expediting I hope it is of my own accord. But for now I will hang on and see where this road takes me. That's life! Try and enjoy it!

I would probably go back to what i was going to school for.

I would go back and get my Certs for automotives and become a mechanic. Go into either the performance side of automotives and build up engines. Or go into fixing transmissions since there is a big demand for them. After expediting i'm sure this will be in my future as i'm not sure i want to drive a truck all my life.

I'll be in a van, down by the river eating govt. cheese. :9

But really, I attained my "backflow prevention device" tester certification recently so I would persue that and continue developing my Christmas tree farm.

Dumb question;

what is a backflow prevention device?

A backflow prevention device is commonly installed on a lawn sprinkler system so that water cannot be siphoned back into my household water supply from the undergroung sprinklers. If not tested annually for proper operation, and the backflow prevention device fails, you could siphonn lawn chemicals into your drinking water. Our water company administers the annual inspection program. An inspection takes but a few minutes and costs about $50. Nice money if you can get a few housing developments

OK, Rich - said it was a dumb question but not that dumb ;)

Thanks Terry.

I just wondered if it was a sewerage device, seeing we have a waste treatement certification in this state and I think that is part of the certification.

Greg, we have a sump pump in our basement. It was back flow tested because water was flowing back into the sump, so that the pump was operating continuously. Turned out it needed a stop switch. I think that was what they called it.

If I had to quit expediting, I'd open a bed and breakfast at my Hamptons summer home.

Terry's and the other responses were correct to a degree. The water department takes care of residential devices but businesses are responsible for thier test. Most businesses will have three devices, one for potable water, fire or sprinkler system and one for irrigation. Thier are four different types of devices. Each state has different requirements as to installation and testing. Each municipality within each state is different as well. The municipality will provide a list of certified testers to the business when notice of test due is mailed out.
