Where's all the trucks?

Steve,
Saw one of your sprinters on my way down to Memphis. I don't see too many of them around. He even used his turn signals to do his lane changes, which the Tri-state guy behind me didn't.

Vinnie, what are you on? $1.20 plus fsc ? Back in 1995 While at Panther I was getting paid $1.35, and that was when fuel was below $1.00 a gallon.Everything else was so much cheaper. Now, everything has sky rocketed in price, but yet, the pay continues to fall.

What am I on? REALITY

1.20 plus fsc is what 1.50-1.60 per mile? What's wrong with that?? Current str8 rates are what roughly 1.80-2.00 a mile all in with fsc? I think that's more then fair for a carrier to pay.

I always favor a % program cause times the carriers can get 2.25 plus a mile on some moves and the O/O will make out. But it goes both ways, when it slows down and rates are 1.50-1.60 a mile it will hurt the O/O. What do you expect, the carrier to give you 100% of the load pay? I remember rates back in the 90's being 3.50 a mile plus FSC for semi's, 2.50 plus fsc for str8s but those days are gone!

Steve,

Good luck in your search for new operators, but discussing pay scale with some drivers I think is like a dog chasing it's tail. i have worked with you guys before and you run a good organization, you should have no problem luring quality operators. May I suggest 1.20 per mile as a base but maybe a % on loads paying over a certain amount or a team run? I have seen some success with that sort of program before. Best of Luck

Vinnie

First you say 1.20 plus fsc for around a buck 50 and then you say 1.80 to 2 bucks including fsc....??? which is it?

E-1 some straights get 1.12 plus fsc at 25 cents and some are at 1.20 plus .25 for a whooping 1.45...BIG deal....how many ways can you say cheap?

I know FSC is different per contract, so the 1.80-2.00 mark was all in price per mile for discussion sake.

1.45 to the truck per mile is on the cheap I agree! Anything under 1.50 per mile is hard to swallow IMO. It depends too on dead head and tolls for that run as well.

Can't comment on your specific case, but whomever is paying the fuel should get all of the FSC. That is the whole purpose of it anyway.

Agreed

Drivers pay versus owner op pay is apple and oranges if you do not own the rig and pay the expenses.

I think that as a fleet owner i would never put any team trucks on for a flat rate basis. Its great to say that you are protected when rates go down but realistically has that happened? I have spoken to quite a few drivers that took freight for "special Customers or Discount customers" significantly below their contract rate.

So if Im not really protected on the downside, why do I want to giveaway the upside when you do get a great load? Teams make more and get a better variety of freight that usually pays more. So my perspective is flat rate doesnt really do much for the o/o especially when freight rates are on the upswing.

Agreed Vinnie! But regardless, FSC is not the issue here, the seemingly obvious lack of qualified O/O teams and trucks and how to attract them to haul our long haul expedite freight is.

Like I said earlier, I have some great teams already qualified and ready to go, it's the lack available of trucks that's the real issue IMO.

I'm agreeing with DaveKc that the shortage has an awful lot to do with the reasons he mentioned earlier.

So you don't think fuel cost are part of the reason o/o and truck owners would not be in the buisness it would seem if i had to pay for fuel with all most no fsc it would defently effect the company i would run for if i had work i needed drivers and truck owners to cover i would want them to aford to run there trucks and make a profit after all that is the reason they would have the trucks in the frist place

Humm, 1.20 a mile.....more like .60 per mile per team member. Maybe one member owns the truck and pays other member after exspenses....even worse.
