Might not be a "stupid rate" for a one payed for truck O/O ...

Moose.
That right there is the kind of thinking and mentality that is screwing up this industry.Think about what you just typed.Say you get a load for .88cpm, no fsc,no deadhead pay, which is actually happening right now.Say the load is 500 miles long with a 100 mile deadhead. so that's .88x500=$440.00 load pay. Now figure in the deadhead also.600 div by $440.00 and it comes out to .73cpm. With the cost of living constantly going up, and fuel, tires, oil, tolls, etc, that is not very much to bring home.I dont care if youre truck is paid for or not. It's the guys with the big truck payments that I feel for now.

You are beating a dead dog....over the years...there is no correct answer to this quandry.

I'll give you an off the wall sample:

1.My brother-in -law is a diesel mech and works cheap a meal and a case of beer.

2. My sister works in a tire dealers and gets my tires at cost.

3. My mother-in-law is in insurance and I get great rates...

4. Truck is paid for....

Now how much can I run for?

Y'a know , many out there don't need to bring home any income...

and as for that ,.73cpm, , what if you carrier can keep you busy ?
say 1,800 a week , ? , not bad , not bad at all.

reading your calculations , raise a Sirius question as to your understanding the costs of doing business !

lastly ,it might be that one of this "guys with the big truck payments ..."
can make a really good income at them .88cpm ...

It's the ones that have a written business plane , and follow it - that have the advantage , there is more trucks then freight , the freight will go on the trucks that know how to run a business.

Seems survival skills combined with math are lacking out there ovm. Don't understand WHY someone would consider 20% dh for an 88 cent load. To dh cross town is one thing buttt... The high rollers prolly WILL take a hit in this environment, along with their smmoooth equipment that can't haul much. I still say "it's half full" if you have your eyes open and are looking for something to fill the other half.

Yea,I know what you're saying. But I feel if we dont do something real quick, these rates are just going to continue to fall to the cesspool level. But it will always be, someone will always haul the freight, no matter what the pay.Just think of how hard it is going to be to get the rates back up to $1.20 or higher once things start picking up.It kinda of reminds me of when I used to own my potato chip distributorship. One of my competitors always had his 16oz bags on sale for ridiculously low prices. But when the potato chip company stopped giving him the promo allowances,he had to take them off sale, and he starved. No one bought them because they were used to them always being offered at a cheap price. This is what is going to happen here. What a shame it is.I know, beating a dead horse.

Guido...no disrespect or rudeness implied....over the years we've seen this debate over and over again....

I think these carriers should shoulder some of the blame...if they had any brass you knows....

This was exactly the kind of answer I was expecting. The example of your thinking that you have shown is exactly how the co's want you to think."well,73cpm is not bad if I can get 1,800 lm a week." So in another words, you enjoy whoring yourself out to these companies for cheap rates? Is this all youre worth? This used to be a premium way of shipping freight at a premium price, but now it is worse than some ltl co's. I really do believe that most of the expeditors out here are the best, a cut above regular truck drivers. We are the ambulance service to the freight industry. But unfortunately, that has been forgotten.Where has our pride went? Integrity?

Guido..don't be so quick....was a time 2 bucks or more was common....there are those that are "whoring" themselves for a $1.20-1.30 per....

Folks, I realize I'm kinda new here ... but ...

For several years now, we all have known that the great times would end. We all knew that unless we had "squirreled away" some extra acorns, the long cold winter of a soft economy would kill us.

Many of us went out and bought new trucks, new homes (that we couldn't afford), new pick-ups or bass boats, etc.

For those of us that were wise enough to save something for that rainy day, we are surviving.

We still have to watch our "P's & Q's" financially ... but the stress of this soft economy is survivable.

Now we hear that GM is going to shut down their plants for up to 9 weeks .... 9 weeks !!

Folks, get ready for some tough times .... and the strong will survive.

Notice I didn't say the biggest will survive ... I said the strong.

There is still time to get your financial house in order, but it'll take hard work.

As for me, my truck is paid for, my "maintenance account" is fully funded with over $15,000, my personal vehicle is paid for (a 1998 Olds Aurora) and I only have $25,000 left on my mortgage.

Life is good ... and if it means that I need to accept $0.95/mile freight ... I can survive till the times get better. (Half a loaf is better than no loaf at all.)

Well, Keeshond0622, you are correct, BUT, it is possible to do it right and still lose. When we got put of of service we had a full 3 months truck AND household expenses in the bank. It is gone now. Our truck is not paid for, we have not been in the business to pay it off yet. Things will get worse before they get better. Many will lose thier business. Much of the time it will be thier own fault but many will drop by the wayside through no fault of thier own. One thing to remember before we judge what caused some to fail. This is still a world were bad "Stuff" happens to good people. Life is not fair, never has been, never will. We do need to have a bit of compassion and understanding. Layoutshooter
