Here's the scenero: Let's say that you're a newbie in expediting and you're going to drive team with someone that you don't know. Let's say that the owner of the truck gave you several phone #'s to reach them any time day/night 24/7 AND specifically told you that you could call any time if you had a question, concern, etc. Let's go further and say that within the first 24 hours you see your new codriver drinking several beers while on duty AND right before you go to p/u a load. What would YOU do in this scenero????

Ahhhh, drinking  . . . Geez Wingnut this is an easy one cause it wouldn't happen. New or not I would have the since to know drinking and driving doesn't mix. This co-driver would be endangering not only his own life but mine as well. I would have let the person know that I did not approve of drinking (period, could never understand why people like alcohol anyway, it's nasty) and I would not be teaming with someone that was drinking in a truck I would be riding in, either nix the alcohol or I would be calling the truck owner and the company! I definitely would not be riding with someone that has been drinking.

Not to mention, don't these morons know we non-drinkers can smell the alcohol on them, and if we can smell it so can the shipper, that really is impressive to our customers! It's no different from smokers who are trying to hide they smoke, we non-smokers can smell smoke in a vehicle or on a smoker, bottom line you can't hide it.

I was hit by a drunk driver in 1992 in the Florida keys. Had a fracture to my C3 vertebrae and still suffer excruciating headaches from the injury. The driver that hit me had 4 prior DUI's, I was his 5th. I was contacted by the Key West attorneys office about 5 years after my accident to testify against the man in a vehicular manslaughter case. He went on to a 6th DUI resulting in the death of a father leaving, I think it was 2 or 3 children, fatherless. I have no sympathy for drunk driving!

My husband likes to have a glass of wine once in a while but has the common sense of "never on the truck or within 10 hours of going on the truck"! Personally I think drinking is over-rated! :(

if you have just 1 beer during a meal, you can not drive for 8 hours. If your seen going in a truck, the keys have to be out of reach of that person,or he can receive a dui
if its a team truck, and the driver in question is in the sleeper, the truck still can not be driven.
nothing that has any alcohol is permitted in a cmv.ie.,after shave lotion, medicine, just are 2

Are you saying I could get busted for having scope or listerine in my truck? If that is the case, I need to leave it at home.

That also goes for dry gas if you use the literal meaning.

Consumer goods, like mouth wash, after shave and so on are one thing because if you are consuming them as a way to satisfy your needs then you have a serious problem and most likely won't be driving a truck.

I use them for fresh breath, I think you'd really have a serious problem if your trying to get drunk off them Ewwww:eek:
So I shouldn't worry? I only keep a couple travel size bottles and fill them up at home(cheaper that way) and yes, I fill them with mouthwash LOL

NO you don't have to worry. BUT when you go in for a random and you have an alcohol test, you have to tell them what you used and I would even bring it along.

I have been randomed soooo many times I am begining to think it is NOT so random. They NEVER check for booze and NEVER ask about meds I take. I ALWAYS pass. I am wondering if I get "randomed" sooo often because I always DO pass? All I know is that it is a REAL pain in the neck and has cost me AT LEAST one load that I know of. Who knows how many other I missed because of it. Mrs. Layoutshooter has NEVER be randomed. YET!!

It is obvious what is happening here LOS.
Those random decision makers must be looking at some of your rants in the Soapbox and coming to the conclusion:

This guy must be on drugs!

Steve: if you found a joint in the truck, wouldn't that be enough for Safety to request a drug test for reasonable suspicion? I mean, if that isn't reasonable suspicion, what is?!

Like NIGHTCREACHER, I also had people smoke wacky weed in one of my trucks. When I got wind of it, I called safety to tell them & asked them to send them for a random. Of course, they said that they couldn't BUT agreed to tell this team that the owner was pulling them out of service & sending them to the nearest clinic for a drug test and they could not go back into service until they took the test. As I expected, they refused to go get tested. I immediately fired them, had the local police remove them from my truck, then retrieved my truck. They had weed stashed thuout the truck and was so bad, that after I had the truck detailed, I asked my local police to bring a drug sniffing dog to go thru the truck. No way was I going to take chances. These guys had weed stashed in the vents, light fixtures, and many other places. It was incredible. Oh yeah, when the police got there to remove them from my truck, they were STILL smoking weed & promptly got arrested.

Do you ever doubt your choice to be a fleet owner....?

I mean these drivers both in case #1 and #2 prolly cost you more then they ever made you or you broke even at best taking in the cost of aggravation...

Funny that you should ask me that....but YES, I do, on occassions (especially in cases like this) do ask myself if it's worth it, why don't I just sell everything and go into another line of work, and many other questions. But, when I truely think about the whole picture and think about things such as why I started doing this to begin with, what are the positives & negatives, and more questions, then I seem to come back to the answer that, at least for now, this IS what I still want to do. One of the biggest reasons why I keep doing being a fleet owner is because my drivers depend on me. I'm a good fleet owner. I have good well maintained equipment. I treat my drivers with repsect, honesty, and I don't rip them off. They get all their pay every week and they trust & respect me. They need their job in order to take care of their family. Yes, I know that they could get another fleet owner BUT there are crooked fleet owners out there along with crooked drivers. Why should I put them in a position to try to find another good, honest owner when they already have one. I take my job as an owner very seriously and I try hard to take care of my drivers & not let them down. I'd be letting them down if I quit just because I was tired of dealing with all the bs. Don't get me wrong....I DO get very frustrated & irritated when things don't go right, when drivers do stupid things, when I get burned, etc.........BUT it goes along with being an owner.
