What To Do When Things Go Wrong

Tire goes flat, load gets cancelled, you get shorted on your pay, shower time and no water pressure, someone treats you disrespectfully, the scales say you gained 5lbs, the Dr's report says....

How do you deal with moments like these? It is very easy to find ourselves dwelling on a negative issue. We think about it again and again, and one or two things can get us so worked up, we let it destroy a whole day. I am not talking about evaulating a situation to see what we can do better, I am talking about switching into whining and complaining mode. Been there? Done that? Me too.

The truth is we get to decide how we are going to deal with a situation. We control how we are going to react when things happen. We do not have to let situations and circumstances kick our back sides. The best thing is to put a plan in place ahead of time, so when a bad day starts to happen, we know how to deal with it. When we have a bad day, our safety and the safety of those on the highway with us is at stake.

There is a lot more to it than I am going to post here and now. But there are couple things that work for me.

1) Pray and ask God to help you with the emotions that you are feeling.

2)If you need to forgive yourself or someone else, do it. If you can't, ask God for help. having a prayer partner or someone you can vent to is important as well.

2) Replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts. when you find yourself unhappy, stressed, mad or hurt, decide ahead of time to think on things that make you smile. Your wedding day, the birth of a child or grandchild, major accomplishments in your life or the lives of loved ones, your favorite places, your favorite smells. Think of things that are good, think about God. Before you know it the stress, anger and sadness begin to fade. It is not always an easy thing to do but is does make a difference.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

These principles work for me but it is sometimes easier to whine a bit first. Then I catch myself and move on. We are all wired a bit different but I pray you can find a nugget here that may help the next time a bad day trys to happen.

Good post. My last load was one of those where everything that could go wrong, did. I'm not sure who was to blame. I'm fairly confident that I wasn't the blame or anyone at my company (dispatchers mainly). Some of it was pretty aggravating.

"When" I can keep my wits about me, I just remind myself that we are all human and we all make mistakes. I think somewhere in the logistical chain of that load, somebody dropped the ball...several times. Its not my place to find that out. It's my place to service the customer as best I can. If they have a personell problem, they know it...or will know it....in a matter of time. Just deal with it and move on.

A calm head and good attitude goes a long way in this business.

Understood and I respect that. Thought this was more a lesson on life and dealing with stuff on the road than a religious lesson but hey, we all see things differently...

I like what u said, God's word has been moved around for years, guess what, its still here. No one can put it in a special place, its always been in special places, some really bad, IMHO>

Rich, if you wouldnt be offended by it, your post would require very little modification to be acceptable in the general forum. You make some great points. I think it would be seen by more people there.

Thanks for the encouragement Rocketman. I will think on that.

I am just tired of God, The Bible and prayer being a "bad thing" in our society. People have successfully got prayer taken out of schools, The 10 commandments removed from court houses and the mention of God is now politicaly incorrect. Not sure I want to compromise my beliefs by removing or disguising God in the article. But I do want good information to viewed by as many as possible.

Nope it wasn't moved because it was offensive nor bad.....It was ruled to belong here is all....Many read the Loading Dock.....:)

I don't find this thread "bad" or "offensive". I was going to move it to the 'Loading Dock' but Turtle beat me to it. That is NOTHING against you or your thread, it just fits better here. It will help many people.

I don't let most stuff stress me out, life is too short and come on now...everyone makes mistakes....you adjust, correct, make everything ok and move on.....it is simple what we do....even tho someone seems to be trying their best to trip ya up....LOL

I don't mind posting in the Loading Dock, I can definately write articles about growing closer to God, living life as a believer and a whole lot of Biblical teaching. I am not sure this article falls under that type of article is all I am saying. But that is my opinion and not EO's. That is why I published the Survey to find out how other people felt or if I am the only one here who feels that way. Then the Survey was really buried in an area that I didn't even know existed... But I am smiling now and desperately trying to practice what I preach! :)

Loading Dock or even the Soapbox. Wanting as many people to read something isn't really justification for putting it in the wrong forum, whether it's about a cell phone or laptop, something with the truck, duck hunting, advertising, or yes, even God. Everything has the appropriate forum. I don't see anything wrong with the post at all. Just in the wrong forum is all.

There's a reason we have different forums. For example, some people rarely if ever visit the Soapbox forum because they don't want to read what's in there. Not their thang, not gonna waste the time. Can you imagine what things would be like if people started posting Soapbox stuff in the General Forum simply because they wanted more people to read it? Wouldn't be long before people stopped reading the General forum, too.

So it really is just a matter of putting things in the appropriate forum.
