It depends. If the difference between the paid miles and the quick miles isn't unreasonable, I'll probably take the quick miles. Trying to recall-- I think in the example given in the OP it's a forty-mile difference. OK, how many miles overall? 500 miles? I'll take the quick way every time. 100 miles? If there's a forty mile difference between the short way and the quick way, that short way must be something else to take significantly longer in time.
Fact: All the jobs I've done have been within the Lower 48, in fact almost all East of the Mississippi. Like one other poster says, I've never gotten one that was more than ten miles different than what my GPS says the fastest way is, and usually the paid miles was ten over what GPS called for.
