I have Streets and Trips running at all times with my current location set as the starting point. When an offer comes in I plug in the pu/del locations and before the offer is completed know how far it really is and whether I like that routing or not. Usually the mileages are within a single digit of matching. I did go around once with a dispatcher when the difference was about 15%. I said something like "So they are meeting me at the bridge at exit number xxx?" The dispatcher asked what I meant and I said "They are paying me for X miles and that's how far it gets them. I can shove it out the back onto the shoulder for them to pick it up if that's how far they want it transported.". After waiting on hold a few minutes I was told I was being paid for about 44 miles more which put it enough closer to accurate to run.

As to which route to choose, I weigh the miles against the better mpg of steady 63mph on the highway, potentially better road surface, less stress and strain on both the van and myself and then choose which route makes more sense on that particular run. I'm not going to donate a lot of miles on every run, but now and then will choose to and let it slide.

what do you all out in EO land do?

Get the freight on the truck..
Not my fault if they sent load offer out late to me. If I cant make their times I still aceppt offer and include in the notes that the times are not possible and start rolling asap. Its their job to fix times or deal with being late. Not my fault if routing pays thru the woods and traffic on surface streets is slow and plugged up..We have a macro for that. Grab the freight and deal with the times as you go. If your late ,your late. Chances are it was late when sent to you anyways.Just keep them informed.
I check routing for both D/head on loaded miles and unless its really off base I dont argue it.
I do get burned alot on the double drops and p-ups..Sometimes that gets a bit hard to figure how far off route the second p-up is taking me. And there has been times I just didnt take the time to figure it out before aceppting load offer.(but I am getting better at watching these)
Not sure I ever went off route 40 or more miles on a single load offer yet??

I remember my first week out with Panther.. I did like I was told and followed the route on the QC...

Not sure exactly where I was going any more but I clearly remember the 2 lane black top turning to maintained gravel, then to fair gravel then to "travel at your own risk!"

Not long after that I invested in a GPS of my own.

I don't worry about it..how many times have you (a collective you) run a load in less miles then you were dispatched....it happens both ways and personally, its not an issue....

Seems to me that you should have cleared that up with dispatch before you accepted the load. Once you take the load it's yours to deliver on time. I'm thinking you should have done the gripping behind the scene.

It is absolutley not a problem if your carrier uses practical miles. I have been leased to a carrier who intentionally used short miles. It was pretty bad.

Well, I gave a company the boot because of this.

Got an offer from pa to ms, (it was 1100 mile Panther load brokered out) and I got the email with all the info. Payday comes and I am paid for 1053 miles. Got on the phone with different people, well long story short, they said that they pay shortest miles, and the reason they gave me is that they quote the shortest miles to be able to get the loads.
I asked if they can show me how that can be done in 1053 and sure it can. You get off the freeway in ky and drive back roads all Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi. It would have taken me 2 days to get there.

I told them I cannot accept this practice. They either pay me what it takes, or we don't do business any more.

They had the boss calling me a few days later to try to get me to stay because I live in an area where they have some customers and they can get me lots of loads. I told him too, pay me actual miles and I will stay. Well, haven't heard from them any more.

Jim..there is NO grip....it is a general thing that happens from time to time....I initiated this topic so newbees could see the responses from the veterans, and how they have handled it....

OH, if so, lets have a discussion.
it goe's down to the cost of moving the freight verses the pay of moving the freight.
sometimes owners will move freight at a loss or a break even for all kind of rezones.
and Expedite is NOT a per load operation.
i will have a way to know what it take to move the freight BEFORE excepting the load offer.
for example in winter time, i will know where the bad weather is around my location.
that'll also help with predicting weather delays before excepting the load.

All this talk about Loads and moving freight has made me Hungry. I DO NOT have a problem with the Companies paid miles.
Now that issue is over.

Id like a very Expensive New York Stip with a Idaho Baked Potato & Iowa Sweet corn on the Cob & Texas Toast and a tossed salad using California red ripe tomatoes and lettice topped wih Dorthy Lynch Salad dressing , and to wash it down how about some Arizona Ice Tea.
For desert how about a nice Washington State Apple Crisp.

It will work out from load to load. Example.- You get dispacted to a area that is on the edge of the eastern part of a zip code. Your dope off is on the far western side of another zip code. In large cities, this could be 50 miles or more, and your paid miles are short as you see it. Now flip that, and your paid miles are longer than your actual miles, but you don't say anthing about that one....

I don't worry about it, Express-1 informed us this could happen, since they go by zip code to zip code. I drive the route I want to, or have to..

That is often the case, and as long as your carrier is using practical miles you aren't going to find yourself shorted that often.

Yep...that is pretty much the explanation Ive got from anybody whose miles consistently come up short.

Those who use practical miles never needed to explain themselves. Their miles were consistently accurate.

Sorry, I just dont believe the zip to zip story that they use.

It generally only works one way.
