And maybe their appearance in Joplin will provoke people to retaliate, cause those folks don't need one more iota of misery - and many have nothing left to lose.

That is exactly my point....

Lunatics who cause people to be upset have achieved what they set out to do. As abhorrent as their views are, I wouldn't let a stranger get under my skin, let alone wackos like this.

I'd like to agree, but I've let a stranger get under my skin [the customer service and tech support people at AT&T come to mind, but there are others, too, sigh], and the folks in Joplin are already stressed more than anyone should be - it's a recipe for [another] disaster.
I loved the way folks have countered WBC by forming cordons of volunteers around the grief stricken families, preventing the 'protesters' from getting anywhere near, but that won't work in this case.

Am I to understand that all the things "Turtle" mentioned at the top of this page, stories I have read on the Internet. They aren't true? I may have been bamboozled into thinking? because it's on the Internet it must be true. Or at least if Glen Beck said it, it must be truthful.

I don't ever even look in this forum, but when I saw this thread, I had to read it. It's clear that these people are begging someone to retaliate against them so they can file lawsuits and collect money which in turn finances more of the same.

I could go, but I won't...it wouldn't be good. I can tell you this though. There are a lot of real rednecks in this part of the world.... and Joplin's not too far from plenty more. If I had one piece of advice for the wbc members it would be not to send all their members to Joplin. They might want to save a few. Some of those folks up there might be willing to ask questions.......later. I would support that.

I live an hour or so south of Joplin and I can tell you that there are people in this area that will not stand for these idiots making waves. Wouldn't surprise me a bit to see violence towards them. I'm in no way condoning it just saying. I am thankful, however, for the freedom we have that allows these morons to do what they do. I saw a group of youths on the boob tube here while back, I think they were called angel wings maybe??, that were combating WBC by raising white sheets on poles between the idiots and whoever they were protesting to block them from view. God bless those people. I just wonder if the tornado had wiped out their town and families if WBC would be celebrating?

The mind is a terrible thing to allow to be bamboozled.

I don't remember which town did this, but there was a town where the WBC people were planning to demonstrate at a military funeral, and one of them shot his mouth off about it in town the day before the funeral. He got a beating on the spot.

Then, townspeople found the motel at which the WBC jackals were staying, easily found by the Kansas plates in the parking lot, and lo and behold, the WBC found all their cars blocked in in the parking lot by double-parked cars, and they were unable to leave for their protest. They called the cops, of course, and the cops called a tow-truck to impound the cars, but ask the wreckers must have been tied up, because they said it would be hours before they could respond, and the car owners showed up before that and removed them, but it was too late for the WBC protestors to make it trip the funeral.

Then, before they left town, some of them got detained by the police because they fit the description of some people involved in a crime in town. Well, it turns out that that had nothing to do with it and were released a few hours later.

I don't think the WBC will ever protest in that town again.

As for Joplin, I predict that this insult will be too much to bear on top of their tragedy, and some fisticuffs might occur.

It was Brandon, MS, in Rankin County.

You may be right.

But here's one thing that deserves consideration in all this, and it's something far too many people want to dismiss: Free speech extends precisely as far as the willingness to allow and defend speech which you do not agree with. And not to put too fine a point on it, but how can those who complain about the abuse of power from government and police feel good, even satisfied, over the actions of city and county government and law enforcement officials in Brandon, MS? It's outrageous.

The methods used by the Rankin county authorities and the citizens of Brandon should be familiar, for they are exactly the same tactics Mississippians used to intimidate civil rights workers and stop civil rights demonstrations half a century ago. If you've forgotten history, and fail to see it repeating itself, rent "Mississippi Burning". Those out-of-state “strangers from the nіgger-loving North” were regarded as just as offensive as Fred Phelps and his wacko Westboro congregation.

The use of intimidation and illegal government power is exactly as wrong, intolerable and outrageous when used to impede the constitutional rights of the heartless, misguided, vicious, and bigoted morons of the Westboro Baptist Church as it was to harass the civil rights movement in the Fifties and Sixties. Those who think you should be able to pick and choose which parts of the Constitution you can selectively apply to the citizenry should be ashamed. The Westboro Baptist Church protesters were the victims in Brandon, and nobody should give any praise or encouragement to the fine citizens and gubmint officials of Brandon whatsoever.

What the Brandon incident means is that some Mississippi communities haven’t learned a thing from those days of murdered civil rights workers and complicit juries. They still think it is justifiable to stop protests and opinions they don’t like by beating people up, abusing the police power, and creating government-organized conspiracies with the assistance of corrupt law enforcement officials. Those who applaud what happened in Brandon are just as stupid, and scary, as the citizens of Brandon, because they have more in common with the KKK than they do with the Constitution they hold so dear.

If you are thinking of coming to Joplin the rest of the weekend..DON'T...

I got into joplin about 1345...went to the volunteer center at the local college and was told "Thanks, but NO Thanks"...well at least until monday maybe tues....seem they have shut the major areas of Joplin down because...barry is coming to town tomorrow...and people are not real happy...they have more then enough people to do what they want done now and are telling people to go out to the smaller communities on the outskirts of Joplin...so off to Duquesne I went....met a really nice police officer at the townhall that was 'in charge"...told him why i was there and he said, Thanks, But NO Thanks....they had 200 people there helping yesterday, today they have 2000 and no plan in place for that many....he did tell me to stop back Sunday around 1000 and see IF they are working tomorrow....

Now, i was thinkin maybe just stop and ask anyone that was working if they needed help....cant do that...you need to register and have ID and a special wristband or you can be arrested...looters are a problem....

I did help a crew of "tree cutters" (5 of them) get back to their trucks for the night, hauled them and their equipment, they were from St Louis and been here since weds and were heading home...took them 5 -6 mile down the road..lol back to the local college....

So I am at the Mall where the "rally" is suppose to be tomorrow and I'll stay here tonight and then head to Duquesne in the morning to see if I can be of help....and go from there....

I guess I'm as stupid and scary as the citizens of Brandon then because I love what they did and hope that the people in Joplin are able to stop them too. I actually wish they could figure out a way to stomp their butts in the ground without getting into a lawsuit, but I doubt than can happen :D

Totally agree with the big T: if and when we counter the WBC with violence, intimidation, or just underhanded actions, we are not really any better.
That's why I love the idea of simply surrounding the grieving families with a cordon of silent volunteers - it does not interfere with the WBC's rights, while protecting those who don't deserve to have the funeral of a loved one disrupted by them.
The more attention they get, the worse they get, but fighting fire with fire means everyone gets burned.
