Actually Leo, his explanation is just the tip of a very big and complex iceberg.
There are things that many just can't understand even if it is explained to them and one is the duality of some major parts of the religion and how the issues are handled within.
It is like the reasoning behind his other comment that the Muslim world views the US military as a crusading military. Many don't get how that fits into the problems we have with many who don't look at this as a religious war. The resolution isn't forcing our idea of what their religion should be like but understanding how it can fit in for those who don't take the violent path within it.
The problem with most of us who can't/don't/won't want to explore why there are issues between these three religions has to do with the unwillingness to both examine someone own beliefs and shed some of the preconceived notions they have in order to understand other's and how they think.
