Chuckwagon,

I think the members have spoken, it's time to move onto another subject.

The federal labor laws may have changed since I last looked into this topic.
I'm not current in that area.
However, it's been my understanding that the federal laws -- from the very beginning of the labor movement -- have forbidden owner-operators (and other independent contractors) from taking part in collective bargaining.
If that is still true, then the union question is a moot question for us owner-operators -- independent contractors -- and for our subcontractors.
If anyone has found out that the federal law now allows independent contractors to engage in collective bargaining, please post that for the rest of us.
Best wishes to all,
Doc.

What would be the purpose of starting a union of expediters? Forcing your carrier to give you that 1500 mile run that he doesn't even have on his board instead of the 120 mile one that he does? It's like squeezing blood from a turnip.

Chuckwagon, I do agree with the need for you to spend some time in this industry and learm how it works so that you will understand what can be changed by lobbying and what can not. You're (supposedly) a contractor, and therefore not guaranteed a particular income. If you really have been a business owner as you say, you would've already understood this. Also, if you are getting your loads from a broker as you have said, you would need no one to represent you to a carrier, because you would indeed have your own authority. An MC# would put that question to rest. No need for a union for you then, huh? The point is, you are contradicting yourself.

Often I see posts on sites where one person will keep a frivolous discussion going on and on just to remain noticed. Normally that person is referred to as an "attention wh0re." This post has spotlighted you long enough.

Addressing the point of unions not being for independent contractors etc etc.
Let me try to explain this AGAIN.
There would have to be a legal id outlined by the courts to determine what is an independent contractor under the terms we are discussing - as was the case in the early 60's when the motion picture industry began one of their union movements for actors once thought of us independent contractors.
So, yes, as the Teamsters office has told me - we will have to obtain a classification of employment, be it employee, independent employee, contract employee, etc in order to move forward.
To keep it simple we could still retain our independent status in certain matters (union) but have employee status in other regards.
To the person who doubts my previous business ownership and experience just because we disagree with each other do not try to put me on the defensive by doubting my ethics, standards, background and character - because that is what you did. Why is it those against this discussion have to get all offensive and attack and try to smear others - are you incapable of discussion, can you not simply defend and stand up for what you think is right?
To the CHILD POSING AS AN ADULT calling me an attention :censoredsign: because I have kept this post going - I say - dude if you do not what to discuss it, read it, hear about it - THEN DO NOT POST TO IT, DO NOT READ IT AND YOU WILL NOT THEN HEAR ABOUT IT. I do not need the attention - I apparently all ready have it first of all. Second, it is not me that gets the attention IT IS THE ISSUE OF A UNION!

Once again, by far the majority are against it. It doesn't matter that there are 3500 registered members or if it were 35000 registered members. Of those who are still active members and who cared enough to post it's around 4 to 1 against. It may be an idea whose time has come but it came to the bus station and we're at the airport. OOIDA is going to accomplish more for us than a union will, if we get everyone involved and overcome these foolhardy notions that OOIDA isn't needed if you have your own authority or wear colored underwear or whatever other lame excuses people adopt for not joining. Give it a rest since it's obviously unpopular. Work wholeheartedly on OOIDA. Revisit this briefly in 6 months and if it's warmly received pursue it and if it's again rejected then drop it again. The entire herd of horses are dead. Let them rest in peace and let's move on to building a herd on more receptive ground.

Chuckwagon:

Tho I feel you challenged me to, I am not going to ban you for expressing an opinion. However, I feel this thread has gone on long enough. You have expressed your opinions, but do not seem to be willing to hear opposing views, as every opposing view was met with hostility and personal remarks from you. People might be a little more trusting if you had more time in THIS business and knew exactly what it was you were trying to change. You stated yourself you are running for an independant, who gets his loads off load boards. Therefore, many find it hard to beleive you have any concept of what a leased O/O deals with on a daily basis. You don't have to deal with these companies you are trying to get to the bargaining table, therefore, naturally, people are mistrustful of your intentions.

I don't see any good coming of continuing this discussion, except a continual downward spiral.

You are welcome to continue posting, but as Lawrence said, it's time to move on from this topic.

THIS THREAD IS NOW LOCKED.
