Nota said he was wrong when he said the upfitter could remove the incomplete tag....and no one else said the upfitter or final stage manufacturer could...I was told I could by the state police...i am not sayng that is right, but no where in the regulation osted does it say i can't...my 1st CV had the driver door replace when it was replaced in an accident, the door can from a 1/2 on van...and i never went through GM to get the nes door jam tag...it had no tag and was stopped several time in different states...right or wrong..it did have one...

I can tell you, I ain't worried about it one way or the other.....if it ever becomes an isue, then i'll deal with it at that time...other then that....Ill keep doin what i have been doin just as I have since I started this business....

They can interpert it anyway they wish, (at the roadside), but they will loose in court everytime, either you ARE or ARE NOT, over 10,000 pounds. If you are not, then you are exempt from the rules.

There isn't an issue of above or below 10k, and isn't an interpretation, the law is clear the removal of the OEM sticker by the upfitter is not allowed.

The owner can do what ever they want, like in the case of Dennis, his van was repaired and the sticker was removed in the process but the upfitter is required upon complete of the vehicle to provide proof that they conformed to the laws that govern the modifications of the chassis.

Furthermore, the courts have in many cases sided with the cops when they have ticketed overloaded vans, not too many drivers go through the process of providing proof that the state was wrong or know where to start. The key is not to overload the thing in the first place.

I'm with Dennis on the thought of not worrying about it, but there is always some idiot cop who will ignore common sense and look only at the OEM sticker.

One other issue that was pointed out to me my a Cargo Max owner that reads here but doesn't post, and it totally slipped my mine....Cargo Max, (i can't speak for Max Auto with the UltraMax) doesn't simply take the rear dual wheels off...and make it a single rear wheel application with the FACTORY 16.5 tire...the change the rims and tires on the rear t a 17.5 higher load range tire and that is noted on the "Manufactured by:" complete vehicle door jam tag....so the fact is that more is done and listed per the fed regulation then just taking the 2 tires off....the vehicle s "altered" and it is noted....

I thought the discussion was concerning the need to log, i.e., below 10,000 pounds. Those "Maxx's", with dual wheels are rated at 12,000 pounds, or above, The upfitter can REDUCE it to less than 10,000. At which time it is no longer subject to DOT regs, such as log books.

Furthermore, the courts have in many cases sided with the cops when they have ticketed overloaded vans, not too many drivers go through the process of providing proof that the state was wrong or know where to start. The key is not to overload the thing in the first place.

I have no issue with overloading tickets, my point was the need to maintain logs.

Yep Moot you are right but many don't order outside the upfitters (many of them refuse to accept a customer's chassis because of the profit involved - Unicell is one) and dealers don't often offer to order cutaways with different options in them because of the hassle they go through. I seen a 4.8 in a cutaway, it was a dog from what I was told but it was there and it was new.

I'm invading here without having read the whole thread, but I must tell you that I recently bought a Chevy 3500 extended cutaway with a Unicell 12' box with a 4.8 and a 6 speed tranny. It runs just fine and gets me 16 - 17 mpg at 65 - 70.
