For me, it's simple enough. I'm getting paid by the mile. At a certain point, it's just not worth it to try to squeeze on a few hundred pounds more. Sure, the van might handle it and you might not even see the springs sag that much, but-- your power-train still has to start and move that weight, your suspension and tires still have to carry it, and somehow your brakes have to stop it-- possibly on a downhill grade. I'll top out below three thousand. Above that, it's not worth it. That's even before considering what lawyers might do to you if you're loaded over GVWR and you get into an accident.

So as I look around available truck sites I see 3500-4000 lbs sprinters listed...on the Alliance boards....

there is no way in the world a sprinter can haul these loads....I am wondering does the risk of getting in an accident and being sued to death in a civil court proceeding out weigh the monetary gain?...

I mean even the carrier listing these van could be sued to the hilt....in a civil court....

Every time we decide to a "little" over, we are playing Russian roulette, with our business, our family, our future.

WHY do we do it? Egos maybe? Because it sure is NOT a good business decision...

When a carrier offers a load like this, they to can be wiped out....

If an owner operator has an accident while being overloaded the insurance company has the option of not covering him.

You can't sit there and say those weights are crazy and then decide, oh ill take a few hundred lbs extra it isn't going that far.

Sure I can Xiggi....This is for conversational purposes....to a point I think a lot of us bend their own rules....given the right conditions...

I have a cot and other items. You're assuming they're all running heavy. Are some of then? Probably. Am I losing sleep over it? Nope.

Nope....you are a short based sprinter..empty weight would be less then us 158" wheel base....but yet the same 8550 door sticker...and your personal items are like real low...

Honestly I will do a couple hundred over at times.....because....when do we always have a full fuel tank?.....I can cover that 200 by just running on half tank of fuel....

He really is....He doesn't really venture far from home....he is a true believer in the KISS theory..

Gooed job, not stating "Sprinter Wanna Be Thingee"

Not knowing the weight, How can we assume they are over? A 144"x49"x72", we know it's a Sprinter, we do not know if it is a 2500 or 3500. A wheel well mod on a 3500 shows the same dims as mine. If I take all my stuff out I would be around 4150 for loads.

Eddie we have the same model...I'd be the same as you if "completely empty"

Monty...I'd highly dispute those numbers.....no way does a dually completely empty with the 170" wheel base and a 6 cylinder engine no less...is 5600...
I weighed mine right out of the dealer....nothing in it bare walls...5100 approx....that leaves 3450...

It's really very simple. A carrier either demands a scale ticket and doesn't offer loads that put a driver over, or they ignore it Caveat emptor, or somethin'

OVM, you'll have ti dispute it with Daimler then .. those figures are from their website, which I linked to.

I can tell you, I owned 2003, 3500 Sprinter, even with sleeper installed I could scale 4,000 pounds.

what do you mean scale 4,000?....payload?

curb weight..completely empty, void of driver?...Now start subtracting all the goodies...

I could load 4,000 pounds of freight in the back of the Sprinter, and not exceed 9990 pounds, the legal gross weight for the unit.

The curb weight shown, (on the website), allowed for more than 4300 pounds of freight.

Cat scales are your friend. Next time you're at a truck-stop, no freight on board but you have a full tank, see what your van really does weigh with you and your personal gear in it. You'll get an axle-weight too, just so's you know. Subtract the Cat Scale weight from your door sticker GVWR and you have a handle on what your real payload capacity is.

Taking the factory website curb weight is problematic at best, the factory has no way of knowing what you've added to your vehicle since it left them.

2012 3500 sprinter #5638 buddy of mine just bought one. That is a curb weight figure one sleeper and personal items are in place the calculated guess is around 2800 to 3000 for freight.
