Took a 6 mile walk along the Bay yesterday afternoon after Greg and I went ballistic. Funny thing happened. Two drake Mallards were trying to kill a hen from another species that invaded their little camp.Could not identify her genis.

Never seen anything like it. I tried to break it up and they drgged her her in the water by her neck. There they drowned her. Her body floated up to the shore. My Chinese wife would have prefered I brought her home and put her in the pot for dinner. In fact, if I had of told her about it she would have gone to find the hen.

I chose to let her become part of the local eco system. But there was a message hidden in there about aggresive behavior and how short life can be. Anyway, have decided to tone it down. None of this crap is worth the blood preasure going up and getting mods on my ***.
Sorry Greg,nothing personal.

Abstainance is the ONLY 100% form of birth control that works. It is also the least risky. NO chance of AIDS/HIV and NO chance of STD's. Yes, it does work. It does take parents being home. AT least ONE in the house at all times. NO home alone latchkey kids. It does take living a moral life, sorry that offends some but that IS what it takes. You cannot live a "do what feels good" instant gratification life and expect good results.
Anyone wanna start a thread, maybe a poll, about how old everyone here was when they lost their virginity? :D

Hey TallCal101,

Interesting story. I have seen the scene played out year in and year out. It is a normal part of nature. Where the drakes pulling feathers from the back of the hens head? Drake mallards are VERY aggressive in their breeding. They often kill hens in the attempt to breed. Part of the ritual is to pull feathers out of the back of the head of the hen. During the mating struggle they often pull hens into the water to "subdue" them and often drown them. It is normal for multiple drakes to "DO" a single hen. Drake mallards also have little reguard for species. They will jump any hen that moves and there are many hybreds due to that.

It is a good thing that you did NOT take that hen home. The fine is VERY high. The meal would not have been worth it. There are few things better than fresh duck, if you know how to fix them. No idea as to the species? Just wondering.

As to you blood pressure, duck hunting lowers blood pressure by 20 or 30 points!!! Try it!! LOL!! I would LOVE to layout hunt that bay one time. Last time I was out there I saw zillions of divers!!! :D

In southern Florida, at least where I lived for a couple of years in Ft Lauderdale, ducks are everywhere. As we were going through puberty, we got a special kick out of seeing which ducks were "getting" any. They had no feathers on their necks. :D

I live on one of the large bay lagoons that you see when you fly into San Fran International
The flight path for landing comes from the south right over the bay. It's part of the pacific flyway. I have every type of migratory duck imaginable cruising by,including geese, every year. There are also ducks that never leave and roost year round. There are many hybrids among the locals.

This hen was unique. She was gold and white(almost metallic gold) with a white plume on the back of her head. The drakes were trying like hell to pull the plume feathers out.Yanking and biting and struggling. One was holding her down by the neck and the other trying to strip the plume feathers. They were definitely working together.
It was literally a life and death struggle. I know most of the local duck colonies as I walk the trail several times a week. For the most part they are fat and lazy. But this new hen really got them hot.Too bad they killed her,she was a magnificent looking bird.Worth mounting probably.

I used to duck hunt,my late brother was big time as I've mentioned before. He lobbied for open space and water fowl protections. He has a memorial bench on one of the Bay reserves he worked hard to save. It has his name and a short bio on it.
If your into Ducks Unlimited, look him up in the archives, his name was Mickey Bernstein.
He did alot for your sport

I will look up your brother. I will have to try to look up that bird as well. Most hens are very drab, in the duck world it, as with most birds, it is the drakes that have all the color. Odd for a hen to be all colored out. I am very familar with all the flyways. The Pacific USED to be overrun with birds but it has gone steadily down hill for years. California is one of the biggest problems on the flyway. They have lost over 98% of their wet lands and are doing less restoration than most other states. That is mainly due to the much smaller percentage of hunters in your population. With the vast majority of funds coming from hunting licences, duck stamps and the PittmanRobinson fund California gets very little Federal Money due to the small input. The general population does almost nothing for REAL conservation efforts. That is a national problem.

Seems a lot of people don't know you can change that setting. Of course, being as the information about changing it is here in this thread, the number who don't know isn't likely to change very much. :D

No, it's like, instead of putting just one slice on your plate at a time, and then having to walk back and forth from the living room to the kitchen each time you want another one, you just put 4 slices on your plate from the get go.

T/C for once we're almost on the same page, but I guess you missed the first sentence of the second paragraph where I referred to the "cesspool of pop culture." FYI, I don't read the supermarket tabloids, I don't watch daytime TV, late night TV, or hardly any TV for that matter except during college football season. However, as the father of two grown daughters it strikes a nerve when kids like this get used and abused by self-serving adults or worse yet, self-serving parents.
