The Trump Card...

Republicans Need Better Lawyers

But they don't want better lawyers, because if they had them, there would be none willing to abuse the justice system with toddler-level filings. Look for a flurry of such findings after Election Day. The flurry has already begun. As with the last election, virtually all of these junk cases will fail. Unlike the last election, methinks the lawyers who use the justice system in bad faith will be more rapidly sanctioned.

Didn't Work Before, Won't Work Now

Trump cried wolf before, and it didn't work then. He's crying wolf now, and it will have even less impact ahead. Same old tired song from the same old tired man. Only this time, he'll no longer be a contender for the White House. He'll have even fewer legs to stand on.

There is a HUGE difference between now and 2020. Trump doesn’t have control of the Justice Department or any high-ranking officials to pressure, like he did with Attorney General Bill Barr. When the votes are counted and Harris is declared the winner, Trump will be reduced to an angry old man grousing on the internet.

It Was Just a Joke

MAGA's response to the Madison Square Garden "joke" that Puerto Rico is a floating island of trash was that it was just a joke, and Trump didn't even know about it. Maybe so, but Trump failed to condemn it and that cost him thousands of Puerto Rican votes, and likely the state of PA, and thereby the election.

Maybe it was just a joke, but Harris got the last laugh. Trump and MAGA would do well to learn what's funny and what's not in Trump world but the real world. When you have no empathy, what's funny to you can be highly offensive to people whose vote you seek.

CNN: "Puerto Ricans and students turn out in high numbers for Harris in Pennsylvania, campaign says.

"In addition to high turnout in Philadelphia, the Harris campaign is encouraged by two big trends in Pennsylvania: Puerto Rican turnout and student turnout are both high. "

Yes, I am.

You can raise all the suspicion and attribute all the motives you want. The poll is a long-standing, highly respected poll. One of the reasons I am not a poll junkie is polling is, by its very nature, problematic. The Iowa Poll, distinguished by its methodology, stands out as a beacon of reliability in comparison.

So go ahead. Cast as much shade on Selzer as you wish. Wave as many red flags as you care to manufacture. It will not change her real-world track record, and it will not shake my confidence in that track record as we approach Election Day, 2024.
Election night 10:45PM - Iowa called for Trump, and it's not close.

Going to Bed Concerned

I've been watching the news all night. The surprise surge by Harris I was hoping for and expected has not happened. Trump is showing more strength than I expected. The race is not yet decided as no swing states have been called. Staying up longer will only leave me tired at work tomorrow, and we likely won't know the result even then.

Going to bed now, acknowledging my surprise that Trump is stronger and Harris is weaker than I expected. If Trump wins this thing, I honestly don't know how I will feel. At the moment, I feel concerned. I care deeply about our American democracy and believe Trump does not.

Republicans have won control of the Senate with 51 seats, picking up OH and MT. With that, good night to all.

Trump Has Humiliated His Foes

That was the headline in one of the early analysis articles now out after Trump's win "Trump Has Humiliated His Foes." (Source)

I said last night that I was concerned as I went to bed before the election results were known. I woke to the news this morning feeling not humiliated, but confused.

The election was well run. I am not challenging the election results.
Trump has not changed. He is the same unfit-for-office man this morning he has always been.
The American people did not withhold their views of Trump, they expressed them at the ballot box.
Harris was a legitimate candidate who ran a remarkable campaign. She had every opportunity to win, and she lost.

None of these confuse me.

What confuses me is the fact that so many people voted for Trump this time around. How did I not see that coming? I live in a deep-red county. I interact every day with deep-red people. I respect these folks. I serve them as my gym members. I work with them in the Chamber of Commerce and other community organizations. As an employer and business owner, I interact with them as employees, vendors, and colleagues.

Using language from the article I cited above, how did I not see "That Trump represents a movement — rather than a flukish convergence of circumstances...?"

When the above-mentioned intelligent and successful people expressed their support for Trump, I dismissed it as them being confused about who Trump really is and what he's really doing. While it remains 100% true that Trump is who he really is and is doing what he is really doing, how did I dismiss my friends' deep belief in Trump as simple confusion? It's clear this morning that I was the one who was confused. I misunderstood the nature of the support my friends have for Trump. That support, that conviction, was not what I believed it to be.

Obviously, my expected 2024 presidential election outcome did not develop. In the coming days, as I always do when I make an error, I'll be looking to learn from it and use what I learn to do better in the days ahead. I'll do the work of correcting my course and bouncing back.

In this case, the development is not personal. A hurricane did not take out our business or house. No one close to me is seriously ill or has passed away. My wife and I remain in excellent health. Our finances are sound. This is a political development in which my opinions were proven wrong and I have yet to understand why. I went to bed last night with an unsettled feeling in my gut. That's gone now. What was a physical sensation in my body is now an unanswered question in my mind.

Today is a new day. In these new circumstances, it's time for me to adapt to the fact that I misunderstood people's respect for Trump, and to the fact that he will be president once again. Like all Americans, I'll respond to the deeds he does as they come into view.

It's customary for a losing candidate to congratulate the winner. In that same spirit, I congratulate the Trump supporters here. The race was fairly run and fairly won, and you helped bring that about.

Grateful to be Grateful

I live my life as an intentionally and habitually grateful person. Whether I'm correcting an error, responding to a setback, mourning the death of loved ones, or find myself bedridden with an injury or illness, I always count my blessings. I eagerly do so because that's a highly effective strategy to progress in life. Gratitude is my default response to just about everything I encounter in life, including this political development. This morning, I'm a truly grateful man, counting the blessings I have this day.

It was a miss by around 16 points on the weekend before the election.
Acknowledging the error. Learning from it. Moving on.

"The poll findings we produced for The Des Moines Register and Mediacom did not match what the Iowa electorate ultimately decided in the voting booth [Tuesday],” Selzer said in a statement provided to the Register. “I’ll be reviewing data from multiple sources with hopes of learning why that happened. And, I welcome what that process might teach me." (Source)

Allowing Time for the Time it Takes

After every election cycle, campaign operatives have what they call their postmortems. Coming together from all sides, various operatives from various campaigns and levels gather at dozens of meetings around the country, sponsored by political organizations and educational institutions. These happen a month or so after the election, after the heat of the campaigns has cooled and people are more willing to talk to each other across party lines.

They talk openly with each other about the strategies they used and experiences they had during the campaigns. All of them being in the same business, they speak the same language and they're eager to learn from each other. Pollsters, academics and journalists also participate in these meetings, especially those featuring the high-level operatives. Anyone who writes a book about the 2024 election will certainly attend as many of these meetings as they can.

These postmortem meetings rarely make the news, but out of them come some deeply insightful reports that help people truly understand what happened and why.

Today, one day after Election Day, we're seeing numerous articles and comments from people who purport to know what happened and why. While these are helpful, they are far from final. The votes have not even been fully counted yet. It takes time to sift through the new mountain of exit poll data (not opinion polls, not if the election were held today polls, but what did you do and why polls).

While I dearly want to know, I'm in no rush to decide what the reasons were for my errors in this election cycle. The election outcome is not a personal emergency for me. I'm giving myself the benefit of time, and the benefit work product of the postmortem meetings first.

As always, I'm grateful for political discussions we have here, but it's time to step away for a bit, to do the political listening and thinking I want to do. I'll be back sometime after Jan 1.

Again, congratulations to the Trump supporters in this forum. You helped produce a historic and decisive win for Donald Trump.

Barely anyone laughed at the “joke” when it was said. It was met with mostly groans by the audience at MSG. The comedian apparently decided to make the joke even after it was not approved. It was not Trump’s decision and the comedian was on stage about 5 hours before he(Trump ) took the stage.

I was personally mad that a mid level employee made the choice of a roast comedian to appear on stage at the rally and make a “ garbage” joke. The comedian apparently did not stick with the approved routine. It was a totally unnecessary mistake that could have had election implications.
But as history showed Biden’s sanctimonious rant to score political points ended up biting himself in the behind and giving Trump a gift by calling his supporters “garbage”. Thanks Joe.
