from the NYT Live storm Blog....

There were reports of roadways flooding, and Gov. Jack Markell of Delaware ordered that no one would be allowed on Delaware roads after 5 a.m. on Monday

I found that hard to believe but after doing a news search, there it is, true. I've never seen anything like that before. An entire state, even a tiny one, closed to driving.

Evacuations urged in flood-prone areas; motorists barred from Delaware roadways as of 5 a.m.

As residents in flood-prone and low-lying Delaware communities are evacuating, Gov. Jack Markell has issued a "Level Two" State of Emergency, barring non-essential emergency workers from Delaware's roadways beginning at 5 a.m. Monday.

A "Level One" warning, which urges drivers to stay off the road, was issued at 7 p.m. and is in effect overnight.

According to state law, a "Level Two Driving Restriction" means "that no person shall operate a motor vehicle on Delaware roadways other than essential personnel."

Essential personnel includes those employees necessary to maintain the core functions of government and maintain health and safety by providing utility services, healthcare services, and food and fuel deliveries.

The vast majority are overblown. I personally had the attitude of believe it when i see it for that very reason. I don't think it has anything to do with knowing it all. The odds were it was media hype.

Millions across East Coast brace for 'Superstorm' Sandy, while transit systems close and supplies fly off shelves | Fox News

Somewhere in all our threads, someone said this is probably just another overblown weather report, hmmmm, someone always knows it all. Sandy is only 1,000 miles in diameter, just a little wind and rain?

We are in elkton, md.. at the TA. little rain and no wind at 0147 monday. Load was canceled for am pu.

Each expediter must of course make one's own decisions about how to react to this storm. I looked at the forecast for Elkton for Monday and Tuesday. Rain is not forecasted in heavy amounts but sustained winds over two days will range from 35 to 50 mph with gusts up to 60.

If we were in those circumstances, Diane and I would be forgetting about doing business and thinking first about protecting our truck. We would go out of service and spend the money to deadhead inland and south, far enough to get out of the wind that is strong enough to tip a truck and propel debris, and probably further than that in the interests of personal comfort.

Yes, that would cost us some lost time and fuel money. Yes, that might cost us a load or two. And yes, that might be an over-reaction. But so what? We'd know for sure that the truck would be undamaged and available to drive later this week.

Our truck is the most important revenue-producing asset we have. It provides our home on the road and is essential to the business we do. Going out of service for a day or two to drive out of storm danger is not a high price to pay considering what is at stake.

Overblown?? maybe but if they did not air the warnings and hype as you call it and people get injured/killed there would be those saying why no warnings? why no information on where to go ? what to do? etc of course you still have those that will ignore the warnings sounds like you might be one of those? I have moved out of North Carolina to Atlanta

All they do is get the information out there....it is up to the individual to process this info as it has relevance to them.

i don't think i said anywhere i blame them for doing it. Why do people always have to read more into posts than what they say.

Connecticut: same thing, 1300.

PA Turnpike: east of Carlisle, an almost-complete trailer ban. No empty trailers OR straights, no towing by light-duty vehicles, no doubles, etc. and speed limit 45. Probably will get stricter as time goes on...

Journal of Commerce magazine has a special hurricane coverage section that talks about how the storm is affecting the trucking and transportation industries. America's supply chain will be disrupted in major ways. It is an environment of opportunity for expediters since our services may be very much in demand.
