So a couple of things.
It's very depressing here, it's dity, dark & it smells bad. There are still dead cars stewn about the streets, insurance adjusters are backed up there is alot of damage. I'm slowly seeing contractors coming & going.
Power is still mostly out in the hard hit areas. It has tricked on here & there. DSNY has been doing a wondefull job trying to clean up the affected areas. The job is made harder because they clean up one area & than the next day more bulk trash from demo & furniture is placed outside. Pardon the phrase, but it's like shoveling **** against the tide.
The affected areas were having a large issue with looters so the city has placed these huge genarator powered sodium lights all over to keep the place well lit at night & to help aid in the cleanup. There are also tank trucks parked here all the time with diesel so DSNY, DOT & other city agency's can refuel on the spot.
Mayor Bloomberg started gas rationing last week, it has helped a bit. But until the power is up & we get steady shipmemts of fuel it's still very tough to fll up. NJ is still the best bet for fuel& short lines.
FEMA, the Red Cross, the Salvation army & other charites have been very good. They are going door to door trying to get people in need what they need. We have had issues with people coming over to the staging areas who aren't in need & hording supplies simply because it's free & no one is checking ID's. People will take advantage, these people have no morals.
Rumor has it Obama is will be visting the area on Thursday. The main staging area is right by my house. It will be a mad house, more so than usual. The areas have attracted tourists & i'm sure Thursday will be worse.
I have learned quite a few lessons though out this ordeal. one being that I can't stress how lucky I was too be in the heart of this mess & come away virtually unscathed. I know somewhere down the line somthing bad is going to happen, somthing much worse that will make up for this. I hope it doesn't happen, but I think it will.
I have also truly learned how much I took little things for granted. Like being able to got o an ATM to get money, or driving to the corner to get gas. Power is everything.
